Uzdowo offers two distinct points of interest for a stay: the history of the Grunwald Monument and the proposed Grunwald Hiking Trail. One is defined by two historical dates, while the other places Uzdowo within a sequence of other places. This lets you decide whether to explore the village primarily from a cultural and historical perspective or to include the route proposal as an additional thematic framework.

The Grunwald Monument

The Grunwald Monument in Uzdowo was erected in 1931 and blown up by the Germans in the first days of the Second World War, in 1939. The years mark two contrasting milestones: its construction and destruction. The monument’s history therefore includes both its construction and its fate during the war. It provides a specific, locally rooted focus for exploring Uzdowo’s cultural history.

The proposed Grunwald Hiking Trail

The Grunwald Hiking Trail is a red-marked route prepared by the Warmińsko–Mazurski Oddział PTTK. Uzdowo is part of its proposed course. The proposed sequence of places comprises Grunwald, Leszcz, Grzybiny, Uzdowo, Myślęta, Turza Wielka, Skurpie, Wysoka, Prioma, Płośnica, Turza Mała, Koty, Jeleń, Wąpiersk, Ciechanówko, Chełsty, Kurojady, Lidzbark, Bryńsk and Bądzyn. Uzdowo thus appears not only as the setting for the monument’s history, but also as one of the places along a larger proposed route. While the monument focuses attention on a specific historical event, the hiking trail centers on the proposed sequence of places.

Within the wider destination of Soldau: Działdowo

Within the wider destination of Soldau, Działdowo provides its own urban historical and cultural context. The Interactive Museum of the Teutonic Order State opened on 13 August 2013 in Działdowo’s town hall. Its Interactive Exhibition spans two levels; the first consists of five chronologically arranged halls. The townscape also offers historical points of interest: the town hall in the center of the market square dates from 1796, the market square is laid out in a square shape, and the old town retains its original medieval street layout.

Another cultural institution in Działdowo is Muzeum Pogranicza, a municipal cultural institution housed in Dom Duży, which was rebuilt and adapted for cultural purposes. Its permanent exhibition is titled “Działdowo – miasto i ludzie dawnego pogranicza.” The two museums thus focus on different subjects: the Teutonic Order State, and Działdowo and the people of the former borderland.

Religious remembrance is also part of this wider context: the Sanctuary of the Blessed Martyrs of Działdowo is located in the Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria and commemorates Archbishop Antoni Julian Nowowiejski and Bishop Leon Wetmański, who were martyrs of the camp in Działdowo. The former barracks building in Działdowo is considered a particularly significant historical site and a testament to the martyrdom of the Polish nation. The Teutonic Castle is included in the “Szlak Zamków Gotyckich,” the Trail of Gothic Castles. In addition, Park Honorowych Dawców Krwi has walking paths, a ropes course, outdoor trampolines and a stage. Działdowski Jarmark for antiques, crafts and healthy food is a recurring gathering featuring culture, crafts and local creativity.
