At the Koprzywnica reservoir are the main basin, “DANUSIA,” and the “HANIA” basin; together they cover 17 ha. This figure describes the total area of both basins. Every year, the town and municipal authorities set up a guarded bathing area at the reservoir for two months and employ two WOPR lifeguards there. If swimming is an important factor in your trip, check the current season’s dates locally.

Bziuki and the Easter tradition

Koprzywnica has a specific Easter connection through the Bziuki: the fire-blowing custom is associated with the parish church of Matki Boskiej Różańcowej and forms part of the Resurrection celebration on Holy Saturday. The tradition has been associated with the church for over 100 years. In 2021, the Bziuki were added to Poland’s National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The custom can therefore be understood both through its connection to the church and its recognition, in a specific year, as intangible cultural heritage.

Churches and the town plan

The church of Matki Boskiej Różańcowej stands in Koprzywnica’s market square. The square is part of the town plan dating from the 13th century, providing a tangible link to the historic structure of the town.

The church of św. Floriana stands out for its highly visible Baroque tower with its distinctive shape: it resembles an upside-down, bottomless chalice and is called “kulawka.” The same church has a fully preserved Romanesque stepped portal with a smooth tympanum. It also houses the sarcophagus of the Niedrzwicki, created by Santi Gucci in 1581. These details offer distinct architectural and art-historical points of interest: the Baroque tower, the Romanesque portal and a precisely dated work of art.

Koprzywnica Monastery can also be described through specific architectural features. The east wing contains a spacious chapter house with a stone floor and a stone rib vault resting on two columns. Here, the focus is on the room’s form and structure—a different architectural perspective from the highly visible tower silhouette or the church’s connection to the market square.

Routes and seasonal highlights

Koprzywnica lies on the so-called European Cistercian Route. Another route connection is the 52.5 km Klimontów–Sulisławice–Koprzywnica loop; Koprzywnica is at kilometre 18.5 along it. The route passes through Byszów, Jachimowice, Sośniczany, Błonie, Koprzywnica, Sulisławice, Bukowa, Wiązownica Kolonia, Smerdyna, Jurkowice, Nawodzice and Szymanowice Dolne before returning to Klimontów. Check current route conditions locally if you plan to include the loop in your itinerary.

Two possible highlights differ in their timing: the guarded bathing area is set up for two months each year, while the Bziuki are part of the Easter tradition on Holy Saturday. If you plan to go swimming, check the current season’s dates; for the cultural highlight, the Easter timing is key.
