Chroberz combines a rich history of church architecture with opportunities for recreation on the Nida. The dates associated with the church complex span the 16th century to the early 17th century; the late Neoclassical Wielopolski Palace and a statue of Saint Florian add further historical landmarks. The river’s kayak landing also has facilities for spending time outdoors.

Church, Paintings and Historical Details

The Church of the Assumption of Mary and Saint John Cantius was built in the 16th century at the initiative of Stanisław Tarnowski, Castellan of Zawichost. The church complex features net vaults modelled on those in Prague’s St. Vitus Cathedral. The paintings on the vault and in the upper sections of the nave walls depict floral and figurative motifs. They date from 1606, as indicated by an inscription on the chancel arch. The history of the building thus brings together Renaissance elements and a decorative feature dated to a later period.

Other features make the history of the complex tangible through a range of dates. The parish church’s bell tower houses a historic bell dating from 1590. The church complex also contains two Renaissance tombs: that of Zbigniew Ziółkowski, who died in 1553, and the tomb of Stanisław Tarnowski, dating from 1569. The paintings, bell and tombs are different kinds of historical traces; together, they span the period from the 16th century to 1606.

Palace and Statue of Saint Florian

The late Neoclassical Wielopolski Palace provides a striking contrast to the older church complex. It was built in 1859 for Margrave Aleksander Wielopolski. If you are interested in placing historic architecture in its period, you can compare the Renaissance influences of the church complex with the 19th-century style of the palace. The two buildings represent different periods and architectural features in Chroberz.

The statue of Saint Florian also offers a distinct connection to a particular time and place. The statue, dating from 1764, now stands in a small square in front of the church, on the site of a former catechesis building. Its location links a historic monument with the site’s former use. If the precise location matters to you, check its placement in person.

Recreation on the Nida

Another attraction is the kayak landing in Chroberz, on the right bank of the Nida. Its facilities include boating infrastructure, picnic shelters with tables, toilets, leisure areas, a sports field, a playground, a campsite and parking. The site therefore offers both boating infrastructure and a range of amenities for spending time by the river. Before your visit, check whether the individual facilities will be available during your stay.

Two different interests come together here for your trip planning: the church complex, the statue of Saint Florian and the palace represent architectural and local history, while the kayak landing offers opportunities for recreation on the Nida. You can therefore choose Chroberz according to which appeals to you more, without treating the historic sites and riverside facilities as a set route.
