Opatów combines a well-preserved medieval town layout with churches from different building periods, a museum of surveying and cartography, and cycling routes in the Opatówka Valley. This offers a range of interests to consider when planning a stay: local history, sacred art, technical collections and outdoor activities. There is also a workshop dedicated to “Krówka Opatowska” toffees.

Town Centre and City Gate

The old town’s market square has retained its medieval layout. Brama Warszawska is the only one of Opatów’s four historic city gates to have survived; the gates formed part of the town’s defensive system. The stone gate was built on a square plan between 1520 and 1530. Together, the market square and the gate offer different insights into the town’s historic structure.

Churches and Art History

The Collegiate Church of St Martin is a Romanesque building with later Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque alterations and details. Its architectural history therefore cannot be attributed to a single period.

A notable work of art in the church is the Lament of Opatów. The bas-relief is on the left side of the transept, at the tomb of Chancellor Krzysztof Szydłowiecki, and is one of two reliefs on the tomb. Its 40 figures mourn the chancellor’s death.

The Bernardine church and monastery complex also brings together different periods. The complex’s first wooden church was built in 1040 on the site of the then-settlement of Żmigród. The present Bernardine Church of the Assumption of Mary is a single-nave, late Baroque building made of stone and, in part, brick. The church and monastery are surrounded by a renovated wall, reinforced in places with buttresses and featuring loopholes.

Museum and Regional Experiences

The Museum of Geodesy and Cartography preserves surveying and cartographic instruments from the pre-digital era. Its collection includes nearly 1,000 exhibits, among them an extensive collection of cadastral maps. The items are displayed in multimedia-equipped rooms and in a retro-style office belonging to a sworn surveyor. The museum thus complements the town’s architectural and art history with a look at surveying and cartography.

Krówkarenka offers workshops where visitors can learn about the traditional, handmade production of “Krówka Opatowska” toffees. If you want to make this workshop a fixed part of your itinerary, check before travelling whether it is available on your chosen date. BORT – PTTK Oddział Opatów also organises excursions to monuments in Opatów and the surrounding area.
