Łękawica offers several distinct themes for a stay: sacred history, the works of the Izba Twórcza Józefa Hulki and an audio tour connected with the Kocierzanka. Its location at the foot of the mountains also provides an important setting. When planning, you can decide whether churches, art, tradition or scenery will shape your stay most strongly.

Sacred history in two chapters

The parish church of St. Michael the Archangel was consecrated on 1 October 2016. The consecrated church houses relics and an image of a martyr. The earlier building history includes Łękawica’s former wooden church: it was considered one of the finest monuments of sacred architecture in Poland and burned down completely in 1992. The praise and destruction refer to this former building; the consecration, relics and image of the martyr refer to the parish church. These are distinct building histories: the wooden church represents earlier architectural significance and its loss, while the parish church is associated with its consecration and religious furnishings.

Art and audio tour

Founded in 1991, the Izba Twórcza Józefa Hulki displays works by Józef Hulka as well as works by his late wife, Anna. The collection therefore includes works by both spouses and goes beyond the namesake. If you plan to make a visit part of your stay, contact them in advance to confirm current availability.

The audio tour “Łękawica – Meeting on the Kocierzanka” complements the collection of works with a different format. Among other things, it covers the polychromy in a wooden church. The term refers to multicoloured decoration and thus points to sacred art as one of the tour’s themes. In contrast to the Izba, which displays works by Józef and Anna Hulka, the focus here is on a form of church decoration.

Easter palms as a tradition

The Easter palm competition is considered a tradition in Łękawica and is organised by the municipality and the parish. Its connection with Easter distinguishes this cultural theme from church history and the Izba. If you want to plan your trip around the competition, check the specific event dates in advance.

Scenery and onward travel

Łękawica lies at the foot of the mountains and stretches along the mountain stream Łękawka and its tributaries, Kocierzanka and Okrajnik. Kocierzanka and Okrajnik are tributaries of the Łękawka. The name Kocierzanka also appears in the title of the audio tour, bringing the landscape description and cultural offering together through a shared name.

There is a free Park and Ride and Park and Bike car park on ul. Za Wodą. You can leave your car or bicycle there and use public transport for the onward journey. If you plan to use this option, check the relevant timetable and allow for the change from your own vehicle to public transport.
