Sohrau (Żory) combines a preserved historic urban layout with a lively fire tradition and a range of cultural and leisure activities. When choosing accommodation, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like to explore the town’s history and architecture, discover regional culture, or plan sports and water activities? Each of these themes offers specific pointers to help you decide.

Fire Tradition and Historic Urban Layout

Today, Święto Ogniowe is a festival for the entire Żory community. By a resolution dated 29 January 2024, it was added to Poland’s National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. For travellers interested in local traditions, it brings together a contemporary community festival and lasting cultural recognition.

The town’s built heritage also reflects different periods. Żory’s historic urban layout took shape around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries and has been preserved to this day. The partially preserved Gothic brick defensive walls date from the 14th century. They run along Ogrodowa Street, formerly called Manifestu-Lipcowego Street, and Męczenników-Oświęcimskich Street. The Parish Church of Sts. Philip and James is a Gothic brick church dating from the 15th century, with a tower. The urban layout, walls and church thus represent different chapters in the history of Sohrau.

Pałac Baranowice and Regional Education

The historic and lively Pałac Baranowice lies at the edge of an atmospheric park and is part of the Żory-Baranowice park and palace complex. The grounds include well-kept avenues, illuminated benches and natural monuments. The palace also hosts regional education activities in Żory. The complex therefore combines a historic setting with a contemporary educational offering. Travellers who include culture and architecture in their plans will find a different focus here than in the town’s fire tradition or historic fortifications.

Museum and Leisure Activities

The Muzeum Ognia in Żory combines educational and entertainment functions. This adds another dimension to the town’s cultural offerings: education and entertainment go hand in hand, rather than focusing solely on architectural history or a single tradition.

Leisure activities also offer different options. The Rajska Fala leisure centre in Żory has renovated tennis courts and beach volleyball courts. Rajska Fala in Żory-Rój also offers a heated stainless-steel swimming pool with water play areas, massage jets and slides. The options differ in practical terms: court sports are complemented by activities in the swimming pool. This can help you decide whether culture and history, or sports and water activities, should play a greater part in your stay.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay

Think about which of these aspects of Sohrau matters most to you during your stay, and tailor your accommodation search accordingly. That way, you can start planning with the experiences that interest you, rather than with an accommodation category alone.
