A stay in Pszów can revolve around three distinct themes: pilgrimage, industrial history and cycling. The basilica and Kalwaria Pszowska represent the town’s religious heritage, while buildings from its mining history offer a different perspective on the area. There are also two cycling routes that can be compared by their length and destinations. You can start by deciding whether religious sites, industrial heritage or a particular route should be the focus of your plans.

Pilgrimage and Religious Heritage

The Bazylika Narodzenia Najświętszej Marii Panny, also known as the Bazylika Pani Uśmiechniętej, is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Upper Silesia. For 300 years, the faithful have made pilgrimages to Pszów to pray at the feet of Pani Uśmiechnięta and seek graces. The icon of Matka Boska Pszowska was also widely venerated and attracted many excursions from across Upper Silesia. The long pilgrimage tradition and devotion to the icon together shape Pszów’s religious identity.

Kalwaria Pszowska, a church complex with fourteen Neo-Baroque chapels, lies near the centre of Pszów. The individual Stations of the Cross are depicted there through sculptural compositions. While the basilica is associated with the pilgrimage tradition, the focus at Kalwaria is on depictions of the Stations of the Cross. The two sites therefore offer different aspects of the religious heritage: pilgrimage at one, and Stations of the Cross in a chapel complex at the other.

Industrial Architecture and Mining History

The engine house of the “Chrobry I” shaft (formerly “Rudolf”) was designed by Hans Poelzig. Work began in 1914, and the building was completed in 1916. Its architect and construction period give the building a specific historical context.

The building of the former directorate of the “Anna” hard coal mine documents both the history of the mine in Pszów and that of Upper Silesian industry. It is also considered an important example of administrative architecture designed to manage a large industrial enterprise. Together, the buildings show different aspects of mining: the engine house illustrates the design and construction period, while the former directorate represents administrative architecture and the history of the mine and industry.

Cycling Routes and a Viewing Tower

The black-marked cycling route No. 319 starts at the basilica in Pszów and ends at the border with Wodzisław Śląski; it is 2.6 kilometres long. The yellow-marked cycling route No. 323 connects the basilica with the wooden Corpus Christi Church in Jankowice. This route is also a pilgrimage route, is 18 kilometres long and is easy, making it suitable for beginners too. Compared with No. 323, route No. 319 is significantly shorter, while No. 323 offers a longer route with a pilgrimage character and the church in Jankowice as its destination.

Wieża Widokowa Jan is over 28 metres high; its highest viewing platform is more than 23 metres above the ground.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Pszów, you can first decide whether pilgrimage, industrial history or cycling should be the focus of your stay.
