Ruda Śląska combines traces of industrial history with green spaces and routes for walking and cycling. This offers different perspectives for a stay: city history, historic workers’ settlements, military structures and recreation in the park. Two railway stations provide landmarks for your journey; when exploring, you can choose between a route through connected urban spaces and individual historic sites.
Routes, railway stations and green breaks
Ruda and Chebzie are the two railway stations in Ruda Śląska on the Wrocław–Kraków railway line. If you are travelling by train, check the timetable for your travel dates. The Trakt Rudzki is a combined walking and cycling route that connects parks, squares and sports facilities, as well as places associated with the history of Nowy Bytom and Wirek. It brings movement and city history together. As a green complement, Park Młodzieży is one of the sites named by the city where you can spend time and relax. Alongside the route, this offers a specific place for a quieter break.
Industrial heritage and city history
The blast furnace at the “Pokój” steelworks is a notable point of interest for industrial heritage: it is included in the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH). The permanent exhibition at the Maksymilian Chrobok City Museum complements this theme with a broad historical perspective. It presents the history of Ruda Śląska through the Industrial Revolution and economic development, from medieval beginnings to the present day. The two offerings have different focuses: the blast furnace represents the industrial heritage, while the exhibition conveys economic and historical change over a long period.
Workers’ settlement and railway station building
Kolonia Ficinus is a historic workers’ settlement on ul. Kubiny in the Wirek district. It was built between 1860 and 1867 for employees of the Gottessegen coal mine and is the oldest surviving complex of patronal housing in Upper Silesia. The site adds workers’ housing to the perspective on industry: the story of the city includes not only the mine, but also the homes of its workforce.
In Chebzie, Stacja Biblioteka is located in the historic building of the former railway station. Thus, alongside industrial and residential history, the reuse of a railway station building also comes into focus. Rudzka mAPPka is an interactive map of Ruda Śląska that guides users to the city’s major attractions and accompanies them with outdoor games.
Fortifications in Godula and the surrounding area
The fortifications form another chapter. The combat bunkers in Godula were built in 1937 and 1938. The fortification group in Godula and along the edges of Chropaczów and Lipiny comprises five combat bunkers and associated structures, including a traditor and an ammunition bunker. Bunker No. 19 has an observation and combat cupola and was armed with three heavy and two light machine guns; it also had a room for an assault squad. These details illustrate a different focus from the city museum and workers’ settlement: here, the emphasis is on specific military structures and their equipment.
