Ratibor offers several distinct travel interests: seasonal kayak trips on the Oder, historic churches and castle buildings, and walks in the arboretum. Recurring cultural events add further dates to consider.

Oder Trips and the Castle Complex

During the season, kayak trips take place on the Oder. The launch point is at the city beach in Zamkowy Park. This activity is therefore limited to a seasonal period; before planning your trip, check whether the trips are running on your travel dates.

Zamkowy Park is part of a castle complex with several historic buildings. The castle dates from the 13th or 14th century, and the chapel from 1290. The gatehouse is also attributed to the 13th and 14th centuries; remains of the defensive walls are preserved on the west side. This means that a seasonal activity on the water and a connection to history through the castle complex can be found side by side in the same park.

Churches, Museum and City History

The Church of St. James (ƛw. Jakuba), a Dominican church, was built between 1246 and 1258 as the monastery church of the local Dominican convent. Another landmark in the history of the order is the Dominican Church of the Holy Spirit (ƛw. Ducha): it was consecrated in 1334 as a church for Dominican nuns, and its nuns’ gallery has been preserved. Today, it is the main exhibition building of the Museum in Racibórz (Muzeum w Raciborzu).

The museum occupies two historic buildings: the former Dominican convent at ul. Gimnazjalna and a granary at ul. Chopina. The combination of a convent building and its museum function gives the city’s history a distinctive focus. If you plan to visit the museum, check visitor access separately for your chosen date.

The Piast Castle (Zamek Piastowski) includes the Chapel of St. Thomas Becket (pw. Tomasza Becketa), described as the “Pearl of Silesian Gothic.” A statue of the Virgin Mary in the market square also recalls a later era: the column on which it stands was erected in 1725–1727. The chapel, churches, castle complex and statue of the Virgin Mary in the market square represent different historical points of interest.

Forest Walks and Nature Reserve

At the Bramy Morawskiej Arboretum, you can walk in the forest and visit the Enchanted Garden (Zaczarowany OgrĂłd). The garden is accessible year-round and is open daily from 7 a.m. until dusk. A forest walk and a visit to the garden thus offer two different ways to spend time in the arboretum.

The ĆÄ™ĆŒczok Nature Reserve is located near the destination, a few kilometres from the city centre. It was established in 1957 to protect a species-rich riparian forest and former Cistercian fish ponds. Unlike the arboretum, its focus is on protecting these landscape features. The two places therefore offer different ways to enjoy a nature-focused stay.

Cultural Events and Trip Planning

Regular cultural events include Dni Raciborza in June, the Upper Oder Festival (Festiwal Górnej Odry), PƂywadƂa, the Raciborski Medieval Festival (Raciborski Festiwal ƚredniowieczny), the “Windmills” travel festival (“Wiatraki”) in autumn, and the Goblikon Convention for Fantasy and RPG Fans (Konwent MiƂoƛników Fantastyki i RPG Goblikon). The dates mentioned vary: June is specified for Dni Raciborza and autumn for “Wiatraki”; for the other events, check the dates separately.

The different timing considerations can help you plan your accommodation: kayak trips are seasonal, event dates may vary, and churches, the castle complex and historic monuments offer other points of interest. First decide which of these interests will be the main focus of your trip. If you are planning a stay around an event, check its exact date; if you are planning a kayak trip, confirm that it will run on your travel dates.
