Rudziniec brings together several historical themes: hydraulic engineering on the Gliwice Canal, industrial history, religious history and remembrance. The lock complex is the technical focal point. Other features include the landscape park by the castle, the cemetery at St. Michael the Archangel and the former Pielahutte ironworks. This allows you to explore the place according to your interests: as a site with a distinctive hydraulic engineering structure or as a place offering several different historical perspectives.

The lock complex on the Gliwice Canal

The Gliwice Canal is 40.60 km long and connects the Oder River in Kędzierzyn-Koźle with the port in Gliwice. Six locks overcome the differences in elevation along the canal. Rudziniec Lock is located at kilometre 21.5. This places the local complex within the longer canal route. The lock complex was built between 1936 and 1938 and entered service in 1939, together with the Gliwice Canal. The construction period and commissioning mark two separate stages in its history.

The complex comprises two lock chambers, upper and lower lock heads, machine houses and a control house. The two twin chambers each measure 71 Ă— 12 m; the difference in water level between upstream and downstream is 6.3 m. The dimensions describe the length and width of the chambers, while 6.3 m is the difference in level at the structure. Pre-war machinery and equipment are still in operation in the lock. As operating conditions can change, check for current information before visiting.

Cemetery, landscape park and industrial history

A Roman Catholic cemetery dating from the 17th century and still in use surrounds the Church of St. Michael the Archangel. The cemetery contains a mission cross, a stone cross and memorials to the victims of the First and Second World Wars. Religious symbols and remembrance of war victims are thus found within the same cemetery grounds. Alongside the technical heritage, this place offers a distinct focus on history and remembrance.

An English landscape park, laid out in the second half of the 19th century, is located by the castle in Rudziniec. The complex of the former Pielahutte ironworks in Rudziniec is an important example of historic industrial buildings in the municipality. The park, the former ironworks complex and the cemetery represent different aspects: designed landscape, former industry and continuing use as a cemetery. Together with the lock complex, they offer a selection of different local histories rather than a single historical theme.

Routes and geographical orientation

The yellow-marked Route 16 passes through Rudziniec, Pławniowice, Taciszów and Rzeczyce within the municipality. It places Rudziniec along a route through several places; the location of the lock and the route itself represent different geographical scales. If you plan to include the route, check current route conditions first.

To choose a focus, you can compare the technical details of the lock with the other local histories: here, the dimensions and components of a hydraulic engineering structure; there, the landscape, cemetery and former industrial buildings.
