Częstochowa combines religious history and art with museums and leisure activities at Lisiniec Recreation Park. When planning your stay, you can choose different areas of focus: Jasna Góra is known for its pilgrimage history and art, while Lisiniec brings together paths, pools and sports facilities.

Jasna Góra: Pilgrimage History and Art

Jasna Góra is a sanctuary with a Pauline monastery and Poland’s most important Catholic pilgrimage centre. It is also one of the most significant Marian shrines. It is home to the image of Our Lady of Częstochowa, which is regarded as miraculous. Częstochowa’s history is closely linked to the centuries-old tradition of pilgrimages on foot to Jasna Góra.

Historical events also contribute to the sanctuary’s significance: during the Swedish Deluge of 1655 and in connection with the royal vows of 1 April 1656, Jasna Góra gained particular significance for the Polish people. The present-day Baroque basilica was built in two phases, in 1692–1695 and 1706–1728. The art at Jasna Góra also includes the exhibition “Arsenał sztuki europejskiej. Malarstwo – Rzeźba – Wota” (Arsenal of European Art: Painting – Sculpture – Votive Offerings), featuring well-known and lesser-known works of art from the monastery dating from the 15th to the 20th century, as well as the “Golgotha of Jasna Góra,” a series of 18 paintings by Jerzy Duda-Gracz.

The library at Jasna Góra holds around 6,000 old prints and medieval illuminated manuscripts, including “forbidden books.” These topics offer different starting points for planning your visit: you can focus on the pilgrimage tradition, the architectural history, or the art and book collections.

City Parks and Historic Cityscape

The Podjasnogórskie Parks are two city parks in Częstochowa: Stanisław Staszic Park and 3 Maja Park. Together with Henryka Sienkiewicza Avenue, they cover 11.8 hectares. In recognition of the high historical value of their features and structures, the parks were designated a Historic Monument of Poland.

Another perspective on the city’s history can be found at Stary Rynek. It was the central square of historic Old Częstochowa; the northern and eastern sides of the square have retained their original layout. The parks and historic square therefore offer different perspectives on Częstochowa’s architectural heritage.

Museums Offering Different Perspectives

The Częstochowa Museum presents permanent and temporary exhibitions at eight locations. The Match Production Museum offers an unusual collection focus: an exhibition there features matchstick sculptures by artist Anatol Karoń. As the current display may vary, check before your visit whether the exhibition will be on during your visit.

The Museum of Coins and Medals in Memory of Pope John Paul II displays more than 7,000 exhibits, illuminated by a system of 38,000 light points. The House of Poetry – Halina Poświatowska Museum dedicates its permanent exhibition to the poet’s life and work. The Museum of the Archdiocese of Częstochowa displays religious art from Częstochowa and the surrounding area, created in different periods; the works are of artistic, historical and cultural significance.

Archaeology is also represented: the Archaeological Reserve in the Raków district displays finds from the Lusatian culture at the site where they were discovered. The permanent exhibition “From the Darkness of History” includes finds from 85 excavated graves. When choosing museums, you can weigh up art, literature, religious collections and archaeology.

Lisiniec Recreation Park: Water and Activities

Lisiniec Recreation Park has three pools named after seas and oceans: Baltic, Adriatic and Pacific. Water bridges connect the pools, and the park also has a sandy beach. The walking and cycling paths are about 2.5 kilometres long. The park offers both short paths through the grounds and a range of waterside areas.

Pedal boats, kayaks and SUP boards are available to rent for activities on the water. Check availability for your visit. On land, the park’s facilities include a skatepark, two tennis courts and a ropes course. You can choose between spending time by the pools, getting active on the paths and trying the other sports facilities.
