Buczkowice lies at the foot of the Beskid Śląski. The Żylica shapes a hiking trail and is also part of the town’s industrial history. There is also a cultural and local-history trail, as well as natural features in the surrounding municipality. This gives you more than one perspective on the area when planning your trip: trails, river scenery, and local history each offer a different focus.

Between the Town Center and Skrzyczne

The red hiking trail from Buczkowice to Skrzyczne begins in the town center at the bus stop. After crossing the Żylica, it runs almost parallel to the riverbed. Along the way, you cross wet meadows where sheep still graze. The route therefore includes both the river and the grazing landscape; Skrzyczne, its destination, is another specific landmark along the route.

An educational trail follows the Żylica stream and its banks. While the red hiking trail is defined by its destination and the section across the meadows, the educational trail follows the stream. These different features offer two distinct ways to understand the trails.

The Żylica and the History of the Mills

In the 19th century, the Żylica powered more than 30 waterwheels for mills, sawmills, fulling mills, and other machinery. These facilities included some in Buczkowice. The river is therefore not only part of the landscape, but also a former source of power for various kinds of work.

In nearby Rybarzowice, also in the Gmina Buczkowice, a watermill complex dates back to 1866. It is listed as a historic monument and is one of the few surviving watermills in Poland. The complex adds a specific building outside Buczkowice to the local history of milling.

Meadows, Views, and Nature in the Żylica Valley

Near Buczkowice, the Pod Filipką meadow offers views of the Klimczok range, the northern part of the Żywiec Basin, the Beskid Mały, and the Babia Góra massif. The named viewpoints therefore include both mountain ranges and the basin. A total of 297 species and subspecies of vascular plants have been recorded in the Żylica Valley within the Gmina Buczkowice.

A description from 2006 lists nine fish species in the waters of the Żylica. It also lists roe deer, wild boar, and hares in the valley. These details refer to the description from that time; they can be considered nature-related topics alongside the views and the meadows crossed on foot.

Local Culture and Nature

Buczkowice has a cultural and local-history trail called “Buczkowice na mapie państwa łodygowickiego.” A trail guide published in 2006 presents it under this title. It offers another way to explore the town, alongside the hiking route to Skrzyczne and the history of the Żylica.

The Ośrodek Edukacji Ekologicznej has been operating since May 5, 2021, in the building of the Stanisław Staszic Municipal Library in Buczkowice, ul. Franciszka Miodońskiego 2. An educational trail along the stream is also among the nature-related features described locally. A description from 2006 also lists the Dziecięca Scena Miniatur Teatralnych as a showcase for amateur theater performances and monodramas, accompanied by workshops for children, young people, and course leaders.
