Bieruń offers several points of interest: historical information boards and monuments, folkloric figures, sacred sites and oxbow lakes of the Vistula. When planning, the season matters as well as the theme: Łysina bathing beach is open during the summer holidays, while the moving Christmas nativity scene operates during the winter season. The town’s history can be explored through its layouts and monuments, as well as its religious and cultural heritage.

Town history in squares and at monuments

The Bieruński Szlak Historyczny consists of 16 information boards: eight each in Nowy Bieruń and Bieruń Stary. The boards are located in easily accessible places that are important to Bieruń’s history. Dividing them into two sections gives the historical offering a clear structure and leads to several places steeped in history rather than to a single monument.

The almost square market square in Bieruń Stary has the typical layout of a medieval town founded anew. Streets lead away at right angles from its corners. The shape makes the square’s urban design easy to recognize. Sculptures of the folkloric Utopce figures stand on a fountain: the Old Utopiec, the Young Utopiec and the Duck. The market square thus brings together the town layout and local folklore.

Kopiec and Grobel can also be compared by their classifications. Kopiec is considered the oldest monument in Bieruń. Grobel is considered a monument of earthwork construction and the second-oldest historical monument within the town. The comparison shows both their relative age and Grobel’s classification as a monument of earthwork construction.

River landscape and historic routes

Oxbow lakes of the Vistula are preserved in Czarnuchowice. The district has been part of Bieruń since 1991. This adds a specific landscape theme to the town’s history, distinct from its monuments and sacred sites.

Nearby, a cycle path runs through Ściernie along the route of a former narrow-gauge railway. The railway was built in 1916 from the Bieruń Lignozy plant to the station in Nowy Bieruń and dismantled in 1975. Today’s cycle path follows this historic route; the railway connection thus belongs to a different chapter of local history than the information boards and monuments. Ściernie is considered Bieruń’s oldest district.

Folklore, faith and cultural heritage

The Sanctuary of Saint Valentine, known to the residents of Bieruń as “Walencinek,” is the only wooden church in the Powiat bieruńsko-lędziński. It also has a centuries-old tradition of indulgence celebrations. Its architecture and religious tradition give this place two distinct historical associations. On February 14, pilgrims come to Bieruń for the indulgence celebration of Saint Valentine.

The church of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle houses a moving Christmas nativity scene. It operates from December 25 until the indulgence celebration of Saint Valentine on February 14. If you plan to visit during this period, check current local information about the displays.

The Jewish cemetery next to the building of the former synagogue offers another perspective on the town’s history. It is tangible and illustrative evidence of the Jewish presence in Bieruń and its surroundings. Its significance also lies in the historical record it provides of the town and its surrounding area.

Seasonal consideration for your stay

Łysina bathing beach is open every year during the summer holidays. This period offers a specific reference point for seasonal planning; it is advisable to check current local information before your trip. This keeps the summer period clearly separate from the winter dates associated with the moving Christmas nativity scene and the indulgence celebration.
