Churches, a former mining site and a city park offer different ways to explore Wojkowice. The city’s attractions range from sacred and industrial architectural history to cultural activities and outdoor recreation. You can shape your stay around your interests: those drawn to the built heritage will find different themes from visitors looking to learn more about the park, events or local sports facilities.
Churches and Industrial History
The parish church of St. Anthony of Padua is located in the center of Wojkowice. The parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is in Wojkowice, in the area of the former village of Żychcice. This places a centrally located church alongside another associated with the former village settlement.
Another facet of the local heritage can be seen at the site of the former “Jowisz” hard coal mine. It contains a historic industrial complex with former power station buildings, a coal preparation plant, a bunker and underground passageways. The different elements show that the industrial heritage is not limited to a single building, but includes several parts of the former mining site.
The urban heritage also includes workers’ colonies on ul. Morcinka, buildings on ul. Kopalniana and ul. Zapolska, and houses for officials. Together, they form a complex that is protected as a historic monument indirectly. Unlike the technical industrial complex, the focus here is on a group of residential buildings as an urban whole.
Park and Cultural Activities
Miejski Park complements the historical attractions with outdoor activities. It includes a health trail, a playground and an outdoor gym. The main promenade leads to the main stage. Information boards in the park cover environmental protection and the animal and plant species found in the surrounding area. Recreation, environmental information and the main stage are therefore distinct features within the same park.
The cultural program also encompasses a range of formats. The Miejski Ośrodek Kultury in Wojkowice organizes theater performances, concerts, art exhibitions and film screenings. It also offers arts classes, workshops and interest groups. The Miejska Biblioteka Publiczna w Wojkowicach organizes exhibitions, screenings and author events. Alongside stage and film events, visitors can also enjoy classes, workshops and events featuring books and authors.
Sports Activities and Age Groups
The “Mistral” Sports Club offers taekwondo and kickboxing training for children aged four and up, as well as for teenagers and adults. Its fitness activities include strength training, CrossFit and TRX exercises; the club also offers corrective gymnastics for younger children. The “Akademia Sportu” Wojkowice Association focuses on a different area, offering football training for children and teenagers aged six to sixteen. The activities therefore differ both in the sports offered and in the age groups specified.
