Hiking Routes in Szemud: Different Route Features

The green Route No. 31 completes its loop after 4.6 kilometres. Its starting point is next to the office of the “Kaszubska Droga” Local Action Group. After 800 metres, the route turns onto Nadrzeczna Street and then continues along a naturally surfaced path. As local conditions can change, check the current trail conditions before your hike.

The green Route No. 32 begins at a car park near Lake Okuniewo. After 500 metres, there is a view of the lake; the route then reaches the historic cobbled highway Via Regia. It is also known as the Royal Road or “kocie łby.” This route therefore features both a specific landscape view and a historic stretch of road.

The red Route No. 33 starts at a car park by Lake Czarne. Most of the route follows unpaved and forest paths. Before entering the forest, it crosses Road 224. This sequence of a road crossing followed by a forest section helps explain the route.

The black Route No. 34 is a circular route just under 19 kilometres long and takes about three hours. It passes through Tricity Landscape Park and into a nature reserve. If you are planning this route, check the boundaries of the protected area on site. The stated distance and duration provide a concrete basis for planning a longer hiking day, without assuming a particular walking speed.

St. Nicholas Church and Kashubian Culture

The Parish of St. Nicholas in Szemud is documented as early as the 14th century. Before 1370, there was a chapel on the road leading to the cemetery. The present brick church replaced an older half-timbered church in the 1920s. This allows the parish’s early history to be distinguished chronologically from the later history of the building.

Inside St. Nicholas Church, some Baroque paintings depicting St. Nicholas and Our Lady of the Rosary have been preserved. The church also holds a monstrance with a rayed glory from the second half of the 18th century. The paintings and liturgical object add another specific historical layer to the story of the building.

In the wider area, the Szemud Gmina fosters Kashubian culture, customs and traditions. It also organises regional and international events, including harvest festivals, folk festivals and competitions. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates in advance.

The wider area of the Szemud Gmina is also characterised by farmland, forests and lakes. This regional overview complements the individual route descriptions: the routes mention specific features such as a lake, forest, natural surfaces and historic road, while the landscape description conveys the broader rural character of the region.
