A city walk, the old market square, historic buildings and the Wierzyca Valley offer different ways to experience Starogard Gdański during your stay. The city’s history comes to life in its historic buildings; the Muzeum Ziemi Kociewskiej adds to this perspective with guided city tours and demonstrations of traditional methods for making regional products. There is also a natural area with a riverside trail in the west of the city.

City walk and timeframe

The tourist route “Korona i Krzyż” is a circular walk of about 1.9 kilometres around the city’s sights. The walk takes approximately 1.5 hours. This gives you a concrete guide to walking time when planning your day; allow for the route as a separate activity. Before setting off, check the local signage and the condition of the route.

Market square and architectural history

The market square is the oldest part of Starogard Gdański and measures 107 × 107 metres. A reconstructed medieval well stands in its north-western corner. The three-aisled Basilica of St. Matthew is the oldest surviving church in the city. It was built around 1350 during the rule of the Teutonic Order. “Three-aisled” describes the division of the church interior into three aisles and thus identifies an architectural feature. The side lengths of the market square give a calculated area of 11,449 square metres.

Another surviving historic building is the former synagogue. The Neo-Gothic building was constructed in 1849 and is now used for dining. The sites span a period from the medieval well and the basilica, built around 1350, to the former synagogue from the 19th century.

Museum: tours, demonstrations and exhibitions

The Muzeum Ziemi Kociewskiej offers guided city tours and demonstrations of traditional methods for making regional products. If you plan to join a tour or demonstration, check the current dates directly with the museum. The surviving Baszty Narożna (Książęca) and Gdańska (Szewska) are also part of the museum. They house permanent exhibitions on history and ethnography; temporary exhibitions are also held there. Guided city exploration and regional production methods thus feature alongside exhibitions on history and ethnography as different museum themes.

Explore the Wierzyca Valley on foot or by bike

The Wierzyca Valley is in the western part of Starogard Gdański, within a Natura 2000 protected area. A riverside trail runs through the area and can be used on foot or by bike. Facilities and access conditions may change, so check the conditions before your trip. A viewing platform offers a view of the entire Wierzyca Valley and Starogard Gdański. The trail and platform offer different experiences: you can walk or cycle along the riverside trail, while the platform provides views across the valley and city.
