When planning a trip to Słupsk, nature, outdoor activities and culture offer different areas of focus. Słowiński National Park is home to shifting dunes, considered one of the few formations of their kind in Europe. The park is also designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve under the Man and the Biosphere Programme. Numerous hiking trails are marked there. If you want to plan your trip around the landscape and trails, these are several aspects you can take into account when choosing a travel theme.
Landscape and trails
Dolina Słupi Landscape Park offers another distinct feature: it is the only valley landscape park in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, and the Słupia River flows through it. There are also routes with very different total distances and ways of getting around. The Droga Książęca cycling route is 17 kilometres long and runs from Słupsk through Zębowo, Radęcin, Gać and Swołowo to Starkowo. The yellow Dolina Słupi hiking trail stretches for 95 kilometres, from Ustka through Bydlino, Słupsk, Dębnica Kaszubska, Konradów, Gałąźnia Mała and Gałęzowo to Bytów. These distances refer to different types of routes and should not be treated as comparable day trips.
The Słupia is another option for kayaking. The kayak route is 133.2 kilometres long, ends in Słupsk and includes ten landing sites with memorial obelisks and bivouac areas. As some facilities may change, check the latest information about the landing sites before setting out. The Jantarowy, Zwiniętych Torów and Słowińców cycling routes also lie along the EuroVelo 10 section in Słupsk County. When planning, you can choose between a shorter cycling route, a longer hiking trail and a kayak route without treating their total distances as a single day’s itinerary.
Museums and regional culture
The Muzeum Kultury Ludowej Pomorza in Swołowo offers a visitor route that includes three farmsteads and two buildings in the village. During visits to selected permanent and temporary exhibitions, guests can take part in museum workshops and demonstrations of traditional crafts. In Kluki, the open-air Muzeum Wsi Słowińskiej is dedicated to the material and ethnographic culture of the Slovincians. The two museums therefore have different areas of focus: in Swołowo, the visitor route leads through several farmsteads and buildings, while in Kluki the Slovincian culture is at the centre.
Czarne Wesele in Kluki is an outdoor event held on 1 May. The festival includes peat cutting by family and neighbourhood groups. Check the latest event dates before your trip if you would like to include it in your plans.
Pomerania in a wider context
The wider destination of Pomerania has nine landscape parks with a combined area of almost 168,000 hectares; seven lie entirely within the boundaries of the voivodeship. Dolina Słupi Landscape Park was established in 1981 in the Słupia catchment area and along the river’s middle and lower reaches. Its purpose was to protect natural assets and the rich cultural heritage, and to preserve their balance. This regional context complements the specific landscape and cultural themes without reducing them to a single locality.
