Hel offers several ways to explore its maritime history and natural environment: the Fokarium focuses on seals and their protection, while museums tell the story of fishing, the navy and the railway. Other highlights include historic lighthouse architecture, fortifications in the forest and dunes, and a designated bathing area on the Bay of Gdańsk. The aspect that interests you most can be a useful starting point for planning your stay.

Discover seals and marine mammals

The Fokarium offers a daily seal-feeding session accompanied by an educational talk. Schedules may change, so check the current times before your visit. The facility is part of the Stacja Morska im. Profesora Krzysztofa Skóry, which belongs to the Institute of Oceanography at the University of Gdańsk. Its work includes the reintroduction and protection of grey seals in the southern Baltic region. A visit therefore combines a hands-on experience with the subject of species conservation.

Dom Morświna offers another perspective on marine mammals: its physical and multimedia exhibitions cover the biology and history of harbour porpoises, as well as the threats they face today and their protection. Dom Morświna is open to visitors year-round, Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 16:00; opening hours may change, so it is worth checking the latest information in advance. Those interested in marine animals can learn to distinguish between grey seals and harbour porpoises and explore two different themes.

Fishing, the Navy and railway traditions

Located in central Hel, the Muzeum Rybołówstwa is a branch of the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk. Harbour models, miniatures of historic ships, archival photographs and models of modern fishing boats illustrate how fishing in the Baltic has changed. Visitors can also learn about the history of Hel and the town’s traditional fishing industry. The combination of historical images and different ship models gives the exhibition a clear thread: the development of fishing.

The Museum of Coastal Defence explores the defence of Hel in 1939 and the historical development of the Polish Navy. It is housed in buildings previously used by the German “Schleswig-Holstein” battery.

Railway history also has its own place: the Muzeum Kolei Helskich collects artefacts from Hel’s narrow-gauge and standard-gauge railways. The exhibits include railway tools, track components and signalling equipment, as well as uniforms, ticket-office fittings and standard-gauge rolling stock. The collection traces the railway’s operations as well as the objects used to equip it.

Lighthouse, fortifications and bathing area

The Helska Latarnia Morska is an octagonal tower built of reddish-brown facing brick. Its observation platform is 39 metres above ground. Its shape, building material and height give the lighthouse a distinctive architectural profile. Fortifications in Hel’s forests and dunes are also open to visitors. This brings the area’s military history to life not only in an exhibition, but also at sites within the landscape.

For a day at the beach, Kąpielisko nr 2 – “Na Cyplu” is a specific point of reference: this designated bathing area is in Hel, on the Bay of Gdańsk, and has a 100-metre shoreline. The 2026 bathing season ran from 1 July to 31 August; dates given for one season are not a guarantee for other years. When planning a trip, note the difference between seasonal bathing dates and the year-round visiting hours listed for Dom Morświna.
