The medieval town fortifications, a signposted city trail and the Łeba shape a stay in Lębork. You can explore the town’s history on foot, learn more at the museum and take in the riverside setting as another perspective.

City Walls and Medieval Trail

The medieval Lębork Trail is just under 1,200 metres long and offers a walk through the period when the town was founded in the 14th century. For the most part, it runs along the medieval town fortifications and is marked with information boards in accordance with current PTTK standards. The trail thus combines a clearly defined route with explanations of the town’s history.

The town walls were built between 1341 and around 1363. They were originally 1,220 metres long and included 32 towers and half-towers. Baszta Bluszczowa is a corner tower that has retained its original style and forms part of the fortifications; it was built around 1363, during the construction of the defensive works. Another historical landmark is the Teutonic Castle: it already existed in 1363 and was the seat of Dytrych von Loupheim, the first Teutonic Order bailiff of Lębork.

The Sanctuary of St James the Apostle is also part of the town’s medieval architectural history. The church is built of brick, is Gothic in style and was constructed as a fortified building. It dates to the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. In Lębork, these different architectural forms from the same period—fortifications, a castle and a church—complement one another.

Museum and Exhibitions

At the Muzeum w Lęborku, visitors can watch a 3D film about the town’s medieval defensive system. The museum is also home to the “Gabinet Nipkowa,” an exhibition about inventor Paul Nipkow. Another perspective on the town’s history is offered by Baszta nr 24, where an exhibition presents the lives of the town’s residents in the second half of the 15th century.

These offerings focus on different subjects. The film explores the defensive system, the exhibition in Baszta nr 24 depicts everyday life in a specific period, and the Gabinet Nipkowa focuses on an inventor. If you are mainly interested in culture and history during your stay, you can combine these topics with a walk along the town fortifications.

Riverside Setting and Surroundings

Lębork lies in the Łeba and Reda proglacial valley. To the south, the valley borders the hills of the Kashubian Lake District; to the north, it borders the Żarnowiec Upland. The navigable Łeba flows through the town, where its tributary, the Okalica, also joins it. The river and valley give the town a scenic setting, a distinct aspect of the trip alongside its buildings and exhibitions.

The varied terrain around Lębork offers good conditions for cycling and water-based activities. These opportunities are in the surrounding area, while the medieval route and the exhibitions mentioned above are attractions in Lębork itself. When planning, you can therefore decide whether to focus more on the town’s history or set aside additional time for activities in the surrounding area.

Getting There and Choosing Your Stay

Lębork is on railway line 202 between Stargard Szczeciński and Gdańsk Główny. The station is served by PKP Intercity trains and SKM trains in the Gdańsk metropolitan area. In summer, there is also a rail connection from Lębork to Łeba. If this seasonal connection is important to your travel plans, check the timetable before your trip.

When choosing your stay, you can first decide how much of your plans to devote to the town itself and how much to the surrounding area. The town walls, trail and museum are the main attractions for a culture-focused visit; cycling, water-based activities and the seasonal connection to Łeba add options beyond this town-based itinerary.
