Prokowo combines a distinctive landscape of lakes and forests with Kashubian architecture. This gives you three concrete points to consider when planning your trip: the landscape, the Kashubian Trail and historic village structures.

Lakes, Valley and Forest

Prokowo lies beside the two small lakes Prokowski and Lityniec in a local valley. A continuous, dense forest complex surrounds the valley on three sides; Prokowo is also set among wooded hills and elevations. Together, the water, valley and wooded terrain define the character of the local landscape. So, if you are comparing different destinations, the lakes are not the only distinctive landmarks: the forest complex and hills also shape the scenery.

Lake Jezioro Białe (Lake Białe) is protected as habitat type 3140 within the Prokowo PLH220080 Natura 2000 site. This type refers to a hard-water lake with underwater meadows of stoneworts (Charetea). This gives the natural environment a clearly defined biological dimension in addition to its visible landscape features.

The Kashubian Trail near Prokowo

According to the regional PTTK trail description, the red Kashubian Trail (Szlak Kaszubski) is 139.5 kilometres long and passes through Prokowskie Chrósty, which, according to the description, now belongs to Prokowo. The figure of 139.5 kilometres refers to the total length of the trail; its local connection is that it passes through Prokowskie Chrósty. This distinguishes the village’s connection to the route from the overall length of the trail.

Historic village layout and Kashubian houses

A historic square-and-street layout with a small triangular square in the south is preserved in part of Prokowo. This structure adds a spatial dimension to the landscape: it reflects the historic layout of part of the village, not a particular route or a set walking tour.

Prokowo has Kashubian houses with raised knee walls. These include half-timbered houses with clay infill, as well as well-maintained brick houses, also with raised knee walls. This shared architectural feature brings different building methods together: half-timbering with clay infill and brick are distinct approaches, while the raised knee wall is found in both types of house. Together, the square-and-street layout and the houses give Prokowo’s cultural character an architectural dimension.

Karthaus as the wider cultural context

In the wider destination of Karthaus, the 14th-century Gothic collegiate church is located in Kartuzy. It is one of Pomerania’s most valuable architectural monuments, unique at the national level and a testament to the work of the Carthusian Order. One distinctive feature is its Baroque roof, shaped like a coffin lid. It symbolises the Carthusian Order’s monastic ideal, expressed in the motto “memento mori”.

Also in Kartuzy, the Franciszek Treder Kashubian Museum presents Kashubian cultural heritage, including literature, material culture, language, and regional history and traditions. The exhibits are displayed in eight exhibition rooms in the main building. They include Bazyli’s forge, the exhibition “Kaszubska współczesność z korzeni wyrasta” and temporary exhibitions. These cultural sites belong to the wider destination of Karthaus; the landscape, trails and architectural styles in the previous sections relate to Prokowo.
