Straszyn is best explored through the connection between its hydropower history and the Radunia. The EW Straszyn hydropower plant was built in 1910. Its capacity is 2,411 kW and its head is 13.80 m. These two figures provide a concrete technical point of reference for a stay that combines the history of the plant with activities along the river.

Hydropower and a kayaking route on the Radunia

The “Szlak Elektrowni Wodnych” kayaking route follows the Radunia from Straszyn to Pruszcz Gdański. On the seven-kilometre stretch between the two towns, visitors can see historic hydropower plants dating from the early 20th century, some of which are still in operation. The route alternates between fast-flowing river sections and reservoirs at the power plants. The technical facilities and the different stretches of water are therefore part of the same trip, without making the route uniform in character.

A visit to the EW Straszyn hydropower plant can be included in a kayaking trip between Straszyn and Pruszcz Gdański. Make the necessary arrangements before your trip. If you would like to continue beyond Pruszcz Gdański, you can travel on via the Radunia and Motława to Gdańsk. For this continuation, check launch options and water conditions separately.

Timing and launch point for the kayaking trip

The stated duration for the kayaking route from Straszyn to Pruszcz Gdański is around two hours. It depends on water levels and group size, so do not plan around a fixed arrival time. Near the “Mielnik” bakery, there is a landing stage and a meadow where a kayaking trip can begin or end. Use of these facilities for this purpose is intended only after prior arrangement with the “Radunia” kayaking club in Straszyn.

This route is not the only way to include the Radunia in your day’s plans. From Straszyn, a scenic route follows the river towards Juszkowo, as far as a kayaking landing stage. The recurring “Wojewódzki Bieg Doliną Raduni” race also follows the route between Juszkowo and Straszyn. Its dates vary. If you would like to plan your stay around the race, check the event dates in advance.

Walking and ecclesiastical heritage

An organised walk covered 9.5 kilometres, passing the Bielkowo and Straszyn hydropower plants, which were viewed from the outside, and circling Lake Straszyńskie. This is one specific way to combine the plants and the lake in a single trip; it describes the route of this walk, not necessarily a permanently marked hiking trail.

A different point of interest lies behind the Church of St. Jacek Odrowąż. There is a Way of the Cross there, with its stations marked by large erratic boulders. Historic gravestones belonging to the Tiedemann family are also located behind the church. The family owned Prędzieszyn, Goszyn, Rusocin, Grabiny-Zameczek and Wojanowo. Their remains were also probably found there during construction work at the church. This local heritage adds a distinct ecclesiastical and historical site to the hydropower story.

What shapes a stay in Straszyn

When choosing where to stay, it helps to keep your planned focus in mind: the kayaking route connects hydropower plants, fast-flowing river sections and reservoirs, while the walk to the lake and the sites behind the church offer different points of interest. If you plan to kayak, take the approximate duration, water levels, group size and the need to arrange things with the club into account. For the race, its changing dates are key. This way, you can choose Straszyn based on the activity that best suits your travel plans.
