A glacial erratic estimated to be more than 600 million years old, lakes with very different characteristics, and a meandering river for canoe tours: Schlochau offers many tangible starting points for exploring nature and culture. Those who enjoy looking more closely can get to know bodies of water, protected landscapes and historic buildings from their own distinct perspectives.
Lakes, protected areas and remarkable scale
Jezioro Gostudno in the municipality of Człuchów covers 46.38 hectares and is fed by the Czerwonka. On its eastern shore there is a car park, a beach, a pier and a recreation area. Check the condition of these facilities before your visit. This lets you combine a view of the lake with a clear point of reference on the shore, without treating the beach, pier and recreation area as a single offering.
Other bodies of water also have their own connection to nature: Jezioro Bardze lies within the “Czerwona Woda nad Babilonem” Special Protection Area. At Jezioro Sporacz, the lake, surrounding bog and forest together form a nature reserve shaped by water and plants. In the “Sosny” forest nature reserve in Sieroczyn, valuable plant, fungal and animal species are protected across 1.55 hectares. These places reveal different aspects of protected landscapes, from a lake area to a forest.
Jezioro Krępsko, meanwhile, has three islands; the largest covers 4.13 hectares. There are numerous suitable spots for recreation by the lake, which is also suitable for fishing. The differences are clear depending on your interests: the islands and fishing opportunities stand out at Krępsko, while Gostudno, with the facilities described on its eastern shore, offers a different way to explore the area.
A glacial erratic, churches and a historic park
The glacial erratic, colloquially known as the “Romantic Stone,” weighs 60 tonnes and has a circumference of 13 metres. Its age is estimated at more than 600 million years. Its name and measurements give this glacial stone a special place among the natural sights; its sheer size makes it easy to compare with an ordinary boulder.
The churches also tell stories of different periods and furnishings. The Church of the Holy Trinity in Polnica was built in 1780–1781 and is the oldest surviving church in the municipality of Człuchów. The branch Church of St James the Apostle in Krępsk dates from 1737. Its Baroque interior includes a pulpit from the castle chapel in Człuchów. The year of construction and the pulpit’s provenance connect the history of the church building with a specific furnishing.
In Stołczno, next to the palace, is a landscaped park dating from the mid-19th century. It is listed in the register of monuments maintained by Poland’s National Heritage Board. Unlike the churches and natural areas, this park focuses on the historic design of a landscape.
Exploring the water and the landscape
The Kamionka begins near Wierzchowo, by the border of the municipality of Człuchów. The meandering river flows through fields, meadows, gorges and forests and is suitable for canoe tours. A river trip is therefore one way to experience several of the landscape types mentioned along a single waterway. The municipality of Człuchów offers opportunities for cycling and trekking.
Sailing takes place on Jezioro Rychnowskie. The VI KING sports club’s mooring is nearby. The “Rychnowy” recreation area by the lake covers just under two hectares. Those interested in water sports will find different options here than at Jezioro Krępsko, which is described as a place for recreation and fishing. These places and activities can be distinguished according to personal interests, without turning them into a fixed itinerary.
Another highlight is the Canpol Wonderland family amusement park in Człuchów, where children’s birthday parties, team outings and bachelor parties can be organised. The address is given as Sieroczyn 4A, 77-300 Człuchów; the access roads listed are National Roads E22 and E25. The options range from nature observation and outdoor activities to organised events.
