Bytów can be viewed through several cultural and historical lenses: the castle represents the history of the Teutonic Order and travel to Malbork, while the museum presents the material culture of the Bytów Kashubians. A railway bridge and churches add the themes of engineering and religious history. For trip planning, the options are clear: the castle and museum, music, or historic buildings each offer a different focus.

Castle and Museum: Teutonic Order History and Kashubian Culture

Bytów Castle was built between 1398 and 1405 as a border fortress, an administrative seat of the Teutonic Order, and a place to stay for knights travelling to Malbork. Its original purpose was therefore not limited to defence: administration and accommodation were also part of its role. The Muzeum Zachodniokaszubskie is located in the castle’s northern and oldest wing, the Dom Zakonny, as well as in the adjoining Młyńska and Prochowa towers and the curtain wall. The permanent ethnographic exhibition focuses on the material culture of the Bytów Kashubians. This brings together the history of the building and an ethnographic display within the castle complex.

Music in the Castle

The “Muzyka na Zamku” concert series offers a distinct cultural focus. Chamber concerts have been held for many years in the museum’s Portrait Hall. During the academic year, professors and students of the Gdańsk Academy of Music perform there on the first Tuesday of each month. Unlike the permanent ethnographic exhibition, the concert series follows the academic year. If you would like to include music in your trip plans, check the specific date in advance.

Most nad Borują: Railway Construction from 1884

Most nad Borują offers a different architectural focus. Built in 1884, the stone-and-masonry railway bridge crosses the Boruja River in Bytów. It is 20 metres high and consists of six masonry railway spans with semicircular arches made of ceramic bricks. Unlike the castle, the focus here is on railway construction: the height, number of spans and ceramic arches define the structure.

Churches and Religious History

The history of religious architecture is reflected in two other named buildings. After renovations in the 1980s, the Protestant church in Bytów became the Greek Catholic St. George’s Church; its dome is designed in the Byzantine architectural style. The Gothic St. Catherine’s Tower is a remnant of Bytów’s first church. Its three floors display material evidence of the spirituality of former residents of the Bytów region. The buildings have different points of emphasis: at St. George’s, the renovation, its later use and the dome are defining features; at the tower, they are the Gothic structure and the exhibits.

Bytów in the Regional Route Network

In the wider destination of Bytów, the perspective extends beyond the individual castle: Bytów Castle lies along the driving route of the Szlak Zamków Gotyckich, which passes through twelve locations in Warmia, Masuria, Powiśle and Kashubia. This makes it possible to distinguish the local focus on the castle and museum from the broader question of routes. Travellers planning to visit several places can use the route as a regional framework.
