Zambrów can be explored through different layers of history, from the Jabłonka Valley to historic buildings and memorial sites. The valley and former parish gardens are natural and landscaped features that are spatially connected to the historic town layout. This connection gives the townscape a distinct link to the landscape. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth distinguishing between landscape, architectural history and memorial sites; these topics offer different perspectives and can be prioritised according to your interests.

Architectural history and memorial sites

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Zambrów was built between 1874 and 1879 in the Neo-Romanesque style, based on a design by Warsaw architect Bolesław Muklanowicz. Its construction period, Warsaw architect and Neo-Romanesque style provide a historical and architectural context for the church. Another historic landmark is the former barracks complex, dating from the late 19th century. The Woyczyński family burial chapel, built for the owners of Poryte Jabłoń, dates from around 1870. Taken together, these sites span sacred architecture, former military use and a place of family remembrance.

The Soviet prisoner-of-war cemetery in Zambrów was established in the 19th century as an Orthodox necropolis for the Russian garrison; more than 12,000 Soviet soldiers are buried there. Alongside the buildings, it is a memorial site with a different historical focus: its origins as a necropolis and the graves it contains.

More highlights in the wider Zambrów destination

The wider Zambrów destination adds other distinct cultural and leisure attractions to the town’s history. The Jewish cemetery in Zambrów was established in 1828 and is listed in the register of historic monuments. A plaque at the entrance commemorates the Jews who had lived there since the 18th century and were murdered in the ghetto and at the Treblinka II extermination camp between 1941 and 1943. A wooden cemetery chapel in Zambrów dates from 1795. The Regional History Chamber in Zambrów was founded in March 2000.

The Miejski Ośrodek Kultury in Zambrów includes a modern 2D/3D cinema, the “Labirynt” art gallery and the “Cafe Muza” café; its programme changes over time. Check current visitor arrangements before visiting the gallery.

The leisure options also differ in focus. The recreation area by the municipal reservoir includes a town beach, a pier with kayak and pedal boat rentals, and a mole. The municipal “Delfin” swimming pool has swimming pools, saunas, a sunbathing lawn and a salt cave or salt graduation tower area. The reservoir is defined by its beach and rentals, while “Delfin” focuses on pools and saunas, with additional facilities. Check in advance whether boat rentals are currently available; renovations may change the facilities at “Delfin”.

Geographically, Zambrów lies in the border area between Podlachia and Masovia, along the Jabłonka. The town is also at the intersection of the major Warsaw–Białystok–Saint Petersburg and Olsztyn–Łomża–Lublin transport routes.
