Agricultural and cultural history sit alongside a river that flows through Ciechanowiec. The Muzeum Rolnictwa combines ethnographic collections with agricultural technology; in the older part of town, a medieval market-square layout defines the historic setting. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up whether you are mainly interested in collections and architectural history, or also in the landscape around the Nurzec.

Agricultural and Cultural History at the Muzeum Rolnictwa

The ethnographic department is the oldest department of the Muzeum Rolnictwa and comprises more than 10,000 exhibits. Alongside it, the agricultural technology department presents a distinct subject area through more than 700 machines, tools and documents. Together, the collections offer different perspectives: one department focuses on ethnography, while the other is devoted specifically to agricultural technology.

The grounds of the Muzeum Rolnictwa also include the Muzeum Weterynarii, the Muzeum Pisanki and the Muzeum Leśne. These add further named topics to the museum grounds: veterinary medicine, pisanki and forests. The department devoted to herbal traditions also maintains a medicinal plant garden laid out according to Krzysztof Kluk’s “Dykcjonarz roślinny.” For a cultural-history itinerary, you can distinguish between technical collections, ethnographic exhibits and the connection to herbal traditions.

The Older Town Centre and Historic Buildings

The older part of Ciechanowiec has a medieval market-square layout. Its architectural history also includes the brick parish church Kościół pw. Trójcy Przenajświętszej, built between 1736 and 1739 through the foundation of ks. Franciszek Ossoliński. The church contains a tomb epitaph with a marble bust of Krzysztof Kluk. The surviving brick synagogue building has a ground floor dating from the 18th century.

Another connection to the town’s history is the former synagogue building on Mostowa Street, which has been converted. The Ciechanowiecki Ośrodek Kultury i Sportu moved in there in 2012. The architectural history of the older town centre and its later cultural use offer different points of reference if you want to understand Ciechanowiec through more than its museum collections. If the church interior or the former synagogue building is part of your plans, check in advance whether visits are possible.

Events and Cultural Occasions

The Muzeum Rolnictwa lists the following events in its annual programme: Niedziela Palmowa, with a competition for the most beautiful Easter palm; the Jarmark św. Wojciecha; the Zajazd Wysokomazowiecki, featuring historical reenactments; the Podlaskie Święto Chleba; and Wykopki pod Wiatrakiem. The Podlaskie Święto Chleba includes demonstrations of traditional Podlachian harvest and harvest thanksgiving customs. The Ciechanowiecki Ośrodek Kultury i Sportu also organises the Jarmark Świętojański as part of the Dni Ciechanowca celebrations. If a particular event is central to your trip, check its specific date in advance.

The Nurzec and a Cycling Route

The Nurzec flows through Ciechanowiec. A further perspective on the landscape is offered by its lower stretch, which is about eight kilometres long: it lies within the Dolina Bugu i Nurca protected landscape area and follows a meandering course. The figure of around eight kilometres refers to this lower stretch, not to the river as a whole. The Szlak Rowerowy Pogranicza Mazowiecko-Podlaskiego is also relevant to cyclists. In the section near Ciechanowiec, it passes the Muzeum Rolnictwa im. ks. Krzysztofa Kluka at kilometre 66.3. Check the current route status before setting out.
