Routes around Wiżajny

When choosing a route around Wiżajny, it is worth first considering the starting point, destination and return. The green walking trail is 34.5 kilometres long, starts at the market square and ends at the border crossing in Budzisko. By contrast, the red and yellow marked circular routes lead back to Wiżajny. If returning to your starting point matters to you, these two loops are clearly different from the green trail, which has a different endpoint. This makes it easy to understand the route layout before comparing the individual sequences of places.

The 12.8-kilometre red circular route goes around Lake Wiżajny and returns to Wiżajny via Burniszki, Stankuny and Wiłkupie. The yellow loop is 16.5 kilometres long and runs from Wiżajny via Sudawskie, Maszutkinie, Makowszczyzna, Kamionka and Marianka before returning. It leads into the Góry Sudawskie, where numerous hills over 250 metres high are often cut through by ravines and sunken lanes. The red route around the lake is 3.7 kilometres shorter; the yellow loop combines the longer distance with hilly terrain.

If you are choosing between the two marked return routes, the key contrast is clear: the shorter loop around the lake or the longer route into the Góry Sudawskie. Both return to Wiżajny, but differ in length, the sequence of places and scenery.

Another route is called “Szlak 3”: it runs from Wiżajny via Sudawskie, Skombobole, Maszutkinie, Wingrany and Postawelek to Budzisko. The green walking trail also ends there, but starts at the market square in Wiżajny. The starting and intermediate places are therefore especially useful for distinguishing the two routes: the market square for the green trail, and the listed sequence of places for “Szlak 3”.

Before setting out, check the current markings for the green walking trail and the red or yellow marked circular routes.

Church and village green

Another point of interest is the church’s architecture: the neoclassical church building and the older Baroque high altar can be distinguished by their age and style. The Church of Saint Teresa of Ávila in Wiżajny dates from 1825. Its high altar is older: it dates from the 18th century and is Baroque in style. The two dates refer to different things—the church building and its furnishings. Plant motifs and angels are among the altar’s features, along with curved cornices, volutes, gilding and richly carved column capitals. These specific ornaments complement the stylistic description and give the furnishings their own character.

A playground and an outdoor fitness area opened on the village green in Wiżajny on 23 May 2022.
