Jasionowo is an inhabited place in Suwałki County, Podlaskie Voivodeship, Poland, at an altitude of 204 metres. When planning your trip, it is worth first deciding what you would like to focus on: lakes and valley landscapes, cycling and water routes, or archaeological and craft-related topics?

Landscape and nature at a glance

In the Szypliszki municipality, the Protected Landscape Area of the North Suwałki Lake District covers 4,964.51 hectares. The municipality also includes part of the buffer zone of Wigry National Park; there are 11 natural monuments within the municipality. These are distinct nature-related features: a protected landscape area, part of a national park’s buffer zone, and individual natural monuments.

Wigry National Park has 245 kilometres of land routes, including hiking trails, cycling routes and educational trails. The park therefore offers several types of routes. Another conservation topic is Natura 2000 Jeleniewo: the area protects Poland’s largest breeding colony of pond bats. Nature enthusiasts will therefore find information here on both routes and the protection of landscapes and species.

Lakes, valley and water route

Szelment Mały is a 168.5-hectare glacial ribbon lake connected to Szelment Wielki by a canal. The Szelmentka Valley connects Szelment Wielki and Szelment Mały with Lake Ingiel and continues towards the Polish-Lithuanian border. The waterscape can thus be explored through individual lakes as well as the valley and its sequence of bodies of water.

The 21-kilometre kayaking route on the Szelmentka runs from the Szelment Resort to the far end of Lake Kupowo. Water conditions may vary seasonally; check them before planning this route. A 2.5-kilometre stretch of the Szelmentka, which forms a steep gorge, offers a different impression of the river. Its gradient is at least ten metres per kilometre. The kayaking route describes a longer stretch between two endpoints, while the gorge information characterises a specific section of the landscape.

Cycling routes

Within the Szypliszki municipality, the cross-border cycling route “Pierścień rowerowy Suwalszczyzny” R65 runs for approximately 6.8 kilometres. The national cycling route “Podlaski Szlak Bociani” runs there for 11.2 kilometres. Each figure refers to the section within the municipality: the length of the R65 route is approximate, while the national cycling route is listed as 11.2 kilometres long.

The international Tourist Road Route B complements the two cycling routes with a road route. Within the municipality, it follows National Road 8 for around 22 kilometres. The cycling service point at WOSiR in Szelment links the municipality’s tourist infrastructure with the Green Velo cycling route. These points of reference therefore differ in type: two cycling routes, a road route and a service point connected to Green Velo.

Archaeological and craft-related topics

The site at Jegliniec served as a refuge and may also have been a local administrative and cultural centre. This distinction is important to the site’s history: the refuge function is part of the site’s description, while the additional administrative and cultural function remains a possibility.

Traditional crafts passed down in the area include spinning flax, hemp and wool, as well as weaving tapestries, towels, bedspreads and household textiles. These activities combine the processing of different fibres with a wide range of woven everyday and household textiles.
