Suwałki can be explored through a range of themes: neoclassical architecture, art and history collections, fairy-tale-related destinations and cycling options. In the historic centre, neoclassical buildings line Kościuszki Street and the surrounding area of “Park im. Konstytucji 3 Maja”. The Czarna Hańcza River also flows through the city. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on culture, literary-inspired discoveries or cycling.

City History, Art and Architecture

The Muzeum Okręgowe w Suwałkach is housed in a listed building that formerly belonged to the Resursa Obywatelska and was built in 1912–1913. The history of the building and the themes of the permanent exhibitions offer different ways into a museum visit: displays include painting, regional history and archaeology. The museum also holds one of Poland’s largest collections of paintings and drawings by Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski. If you are particularly interested in painting, you can take this collection focus into account when choosing what to see. Before visiting the museum, check which exhibitions are currently available.

Another cultural landmark is the restored Stara Łaźnia, which includes works by the artist Andrzej Strumiłło. If you plan to see these works as a specific part of your itinerary, check access in advance. The neoclassical buildings along Kościuszki Street and in the surrounding area of the park add an urban perspective to the museum sites. Visitors interested in architecture can therefore consider both individual collections and the historic centre as themes for their stay.

Fairy-Tale Themes and Different Places to Visit

Zaułek Krasnoludków is located behind the Muzeum im. Marii Konopnickiej and offers children a fairy-tale experience with King Błystek, his entourage and Niania Anusia. The focus here is on specific characters and their fairy-tale world. The “Krasnoludki są na świecie” walking trail offers a different kind of destination: inspired by the stories of Maria Konopnicka, it is an attraction for young visitors and others. If you are choosing between the two, Zaułek offers an experience with named characters, while the walking trail focuses on its literary inspiration and the route itself.

Cycling and an Annual Event

For cyclists, two different aspects of Suwałki are worth distinguishing. The Green Velo long-distance cycling route passes through the city and is considered the longest cycling route in eastern Poland. The Suwalski Bike Park at 1A Stanisława Moniuszki Street, by contrast, is a specific facility with several features: its dirt park has two obstacle lines. The mini pump track is intended for children aged 3 to 6; the asphalt pump track is for all age groups. You can therefore consider a long-distance route through Suwałki and a park with specific pump-track facilities as separate options when planning.

The Suwałki Blues Festival may also be an important factor when choosing when to travel: it takes place in Suwałki every year in early July. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the exact event dates before making arrangements. You can organise the themes mentioned here according to your interests and preferred dates, without needing to follow a fixed itinerary during your stay.
