A railway station in the dworkowy style, a Neo-Baroque parish church and traces of former manor estates give Moniecki a distinctive cultural and historical focus. Two architectural themes meet in Mońki: interwar railway architecture and a church built in the 1920s. Further historical clues lead to Sikory, Hornostaje and Wojszki, as well as to the area around the village of Krzeczkowo. There is also a cycling route that starts and ends in Mońki. Architecture, traditions, historic landscapes and cycling offer a variety of ways to plan a trip.

Railway Station and Church Architecture in Mońki

The railway station is in the centre of Mońki, west of the DK Białystok–Ełk road. It is an example of interwar railway architecture in the dworkowy style, which can be classified as manor-house style. The historic facilities on the ground floor included a buffet, a ticket office, a waiting room and a goods scale. This combination connects the architectural perspective with the station’s different functions: the buffet and waiting room served passengers, while the ticket office and goods scale served passenger and freight traffic.

Another architectural feature is the parish church of Our Lady of Częstochowa and St Casimir in Mońki. It was built in the 1920s in the Neo-Baroque style, to a design by Warsaw architect Stefan Szyller, and is among the listed attractions of Mońki Municipality. Together, the station and church showcase different types and styles of architecture: railway architecture in the dworkowy style and a Neo-Baroque place of worship.

Manor Estates and Historic Landscapes

The manor house in Sikory is one of the oldest wooden residential buildings in Podlaskie Voivodeship. In Hornostaje, the remains of a manor estate are among the attractions of Mońki Municipality; in Wojszki, the remains of a former manor garden are also among them. The so-called Pisarowa Góra near the village of Krzeczkowo in Mońki Municipality is associated with traces of early settlement. These are distinct from the evidence of the former manor estates of Waśki, Hornostaje and Krzeczkowo: despite the extensive destruction of the buildings in these areas, traces of their existence remain. The historic landscape thus brings together different features—a wooden residential building, the remains of a manor estate and garden, and traces of early settlement.

Traditions and Cycling Route

Traditions also have a specific connection to Mońki. The 2025 regulations for the 29th Voivodeship Competition “Zdobnictwa Obrzędowego Cyklu Wiosennego i Świąt Wielkanocnych” name the Moniecki Cultural Centre in Mońki as the organiser. Competition entries include decorated Easter eggs, palms, floral decorations, straw mobiles and paper cut-outs. Traditional methods are stipulated for the Easter eggs; the other decorations are to follow local tradition. The focus here is Easter customs and forms of decoration—a different way of exploring cultural history from looking at buildings.

Two transport routes cross the area of Mońki Municipality: National Road 65, which connects Gołdap with the border crossing at Bobrowniki, and railway line No. 38. The station’s location, by contrast, refers to the centre of Mońki, west of the DK Białystok–Ełk road; this distinction separates the municipality from the town itself. One route description identifies a signposted cycling route from Mońki via Sikory, Kalinówka Kościelna and Przytulanka, returning to Mońki. This sequence forms a loop that starts and ends in Mońki, passing through the three named places along the way.
