Trześcianka brings together two wooden churches and a preserved village layout from the 16th century. Several routes pass through the village; they differ, among other things, in their sequence of stops, their classification as a cycling route, and their thematic focus. This lets you weigh up your interest in architectural and settlement history against route-specific interests.

Two Churches, Different Building Histories

The Orthodox parish Church of St. Michael the Archangel is a wooden church with a rectangular floor plan and exterior cladding. It was built between 1864 and 1867 on the site of a church that burned down in 1835. The dates refer to different events: 1835 to the fire that destroyed the earlier building, and 1864 to 1867 to the construction of St. Michael’s.

A second wooden church stands in the parish cemetery, dedicated to the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It dates from the early 19th century and was moved from Białowieża to its present location at the end of the 19th century. Its early date and later relocation mark two distinct chapters in its history.

The churches share the same building material, but their histories of location differ: St. Michael stands on the site of an earlier building, while the church dedicated to Mary was brought from Białowieża.

A Village Layout Dating from the 16th Century

The village layout is another of the area’s historical features. Trześcianka has preserved its spatial layout from the 16th century, associated with the włóczna land-measurement system: a street built up on both sides. Unlike the churches, the focus here is not the history of individual buildings, but the layout of the village. If you are interested in the development of settlements, this spatial perspective complements a closer look at the religious buildings.

Routes Through Trześcianka

The green-marked Szlak Krainy Otwartych Okiennic runs through the village along the Narew–Ancuty–Trześcianka–Soce–Puchły route. In this sequence, Trześcianka lies between Ancuty and Soce. Check the current waymarking on site before setting out on a specific trip.

The Podlaski Szlak Bociani is a cycling route that also passes through Trześcianka. Along the route, you can experience the landscapes around the Narew; the white stork is a defining feature of the local landscape. This gives you a practical distinction when planning: the green route has a specified sequence of places, while the Szlak Bociani is classified as a cycling route and is associated with the Narew landscape. Conditions on the routes may vary.

Two other routes pass through the village: the Szlak Świątyń Prawosławnych and the Podlaski Szlak Kulturowy „Drzewo i Sacrum“. This cultural route was created to showcase the beauty of wooden architecture, as well as places of particular tourist interest and value in Powiat bielski and Powiat hajnowski. Its theme aligns with Trześcianka’s wooden churches, connecting wooden architecture with places in both counties. Conditions on the other routes may also vary.
