Tykocin offers several points of interest for a stay: Jewish culture at the Great Synagogue, the architectural history of the castle and Bernardine monastery complex, and routes connected with the town’s history and nature. When planning your trip, you can choose between cultural sites and time outdoors. The educational trail along the Narew links the riverbank, information and nature observation; the blue Królowej Bony hiking trail also starts in Tykocin.

Jewish Culture at the Great Synagogue

Since 1977, the Great Synagogue in Tykocin has housed the Museum of Jewish Culture in Tykocin. Exhibits include a reconstructed Aron ha-Kodesh with carved doors, a parochet and a lambrequin, as well as movable historical furnishings such as benches, reading desks and wall stands. The Aron ha-Kodesh is the sacred shrine; the parochet and lambrequin complement its fittings. The carved doors are also among the visible details of the reconstructed object.

The movable furnishings represent another aspect of the historic interior. This brings the subject to life through specific elements: the reconstructed shrine and the furniture on display in the museum. For visitors interested in Jewish culture, the Great Synagogue offers a clear focus, distinct from the historic buildings and riverside routes.

Castle and Monastery: Different Periods of Construction

Tykocin Castle was expanded from 1549 to 1575 on the orders of King Sigismund Augustus, by the royal master builder Hiob Pretfus. These dates refer to the expansion. The Bernardine monastery complex in Tykocin was built later, from 1771 to 1791. The two projects and periods can therefore be compared: the castle’s expansion in the 16th century and the construction of the monastery complex in the late 18th century.

The roles in the castle’s history are also clearly defined: King Sigismund Augustus ordered the expansion, and Hiob Pretfus carried it out as royal master builder. Alongside the information about the later construction of the monastery complex, this provides a chronological comparison that distinguishes the two building histories. If you want to understand Tykocin’s history through its buildings, the different periods offer a tangible starting point.

Educational Trail along the Narew and the KrĂłlowej Bony Hiking Trail

The educational trail along the Narew runs along almost the entire riverbank. There are benches and information boards along the route covering the town’s history, attractions and nature. You can also observe life in the valley of Podlachia’s great river. The trail therefore brings together several themes: the riverside route, information about the town and the natural environment of the river valley.

The blue KrĂłlowej Bony hiking trail is 75 kilometres long and starts in Tykocin. Different details help distinguish the routes: the educational trail focuses on the riverbank, information boards and nature observation; the hiking trail is identified by its blue marking, total length and starting point. Check local trail conditions before setting out on the KrĂłlowej Bony trail. This will help you choose whether you would rather follow the themes of an educational trail or the designated features of a hiking route.
