Choroszcz combines a distinctive history as a residence with marked trails that pass through the town or end here. The Branicki Palace on an artificial island is at the heart of its cultural history; the Museum of Palace Interiors and a former Dominican monastery add changing exhibitions and historic wall paintings to the picture. For planning purposes, it is helpful to distinguish between the two: the residence and monastery are cultural-history highlights, while the trails can be compared by activity and total distance.

Palace Island and the Residence Complex

The Branicki Palace was built on an artificial island before 1729. In the third quarter of the 18th century, the complex was expanded into a residential estate with pavilions and outbuildings. The sequence reveals two phases of construction: first the palace, then the expansion of the estate. Because of its architectural form and spatial layout, the palace and park complex created in the 18th century was considered exceptional within Polish architecture. Architectural form describes the design; spatial layout draws attention to the complex as a whole, not just the palace building.

Museum and Monastery History

The Museum of Palace Interiors is housed in the rebuilt summer residence of Jan Klemens Branicki. It holds temporary exhibitions on the art, culture, and customs of times past. The exhibition themes broaden the view of the residence with changing perspectives on earlier ways of life. If you would like to plan your cultural visit around them, check the current exhibition program in advance.

Choroszcz is also home to the church and former Dominican monastery dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and Saint Stephen the Martyr. Fragments of wall paintings from the third quarter of the 18th century have been preserved in the former monastery. This dating falls within the same period as the expansion of the palace complex. This makes it possible to compare two distinct art-historical subjects from a shared era: wall paintings in the former monastery and the development of the residential estate.

Marked Trails Through and to Choroszcz

The green-marked Zygmunt Gloger Hiking Trail is 48 km long and passes through Choroszcz. The blue-marked Włókniarzy Hiking Trail also passes through the town and is 60 km long. This makes it possible to compare the total distances of the two hiking trails: the blue trail is 12 km longer. The orange-marked Dolina Górnej Narwi horse-riding trail has a different connection to the town: it is 110 km long and ends in Choroszcz. The options therefore differ both by activity and by whether a trail passes through the town or ends here.

Dominican Fair

The Dominican Fair takes place in the park by the Museum of Palace Interiors. It is popular throughout the Białostocczyzna region. If you would like to include the fair in your stay, check the event dates in advance.
