Discover Stare Siołkowice through a range of travel interests: the Church of St Michael the Archangel, a historic walking trail and an annual spring tradition. Small religious monuments and the landscape of forests, rivers and ponds add to the picture of the village. You can explore its architectural history, local history on foot and opportunities to enjoy nature as different focuses for your trip.

Church of St Michael the Archangel

The present-day brick Church of St Michael the Archangel was built between 1825 and 1830 in the Neoclassical style. It has a single nave and a wooden coffered ceiling. A single-nave layout brings the church space together in one main nave; a coffered ceiling divides the ceiling surface into panels. Polychromy refers to the ceiling’s colourful decoration. Together, these features offer different ways to explore the architecture: its building material, layout and ceiling design.

From 2012, restoration work included reconstructing the ceiling polychromy and the choir-gallery balustrade; the main altar and pulpit were restored and reconstructed. In 2020, the church was added to the Opole Voivodeship Architectural Trail of K. F. Schinkel. The dates answer different questions: 1825–1830 indicates when the present-day church was built, while 2020 is the year it was added to the trail.

Historic Walking Trail

The scenic, easy historic walking trail is 1.2 kilometres long. It passes through the centre of Stare Siołkowice and along historic Michała Street, through the historic village layout and partly in the shade of trees. The trail’s 23 points are marked on a Google map; check whether the map is available before your visit. The length gives an indication of the distance on foot, while the map points add marked landmarks to the route.

The church and walking trail offer different perspectives on the village’s history: the church highlights its architecture and restoration work, while the trail follows the street layout and historic structure of the centre. This lets you choose between visiting a single building and walking a route through the village.

Small Monuments and Tradition

Stare Siołkowice is said to have 72 chapels, 14 crosses and two religious statues as small religious monuments. This variety of religious landmarks adds to the picture provided by the church itself.

Traditionally, several dozen decorated Marzanki are displayed in house windows every year on the Sunday before Palm Sunday. The custom is therefore tied to a particular Sunday in the annual calendar.

Information boards in the village centre display historic photographs of their respective locations. If you are specifically looking for the boards, check their current condition in advance.

Landscape and Trip Planning

Stare Siołkowice lies among forests, rivers and ponds, and the landscape offers opportunities to enjoy nature. Alongside its cultural attractions, it provides a separate focus for planning your trip. When looking for a hotel for your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on architecture and local history or on enjoying nature.
