Pokój is defined by two distinct highlights: a historic park ensemble and the Church of Duchess Sophie. The park should not be understood as a single, uniform grounds. It comprises a French garden in the Baroque style, a 19th-century landscape park, and an English park on Winna Góra. This layout helps distinguish the different aspects of the landscape and its history: they range from Baroque garden design to a park section with its own name and location.

The Park Landscape and Its Distinctive Features

The English park has an atmospheric, sentimental character. Its park architecture includes ruins, obelisks, castles, temples, busts, pavilions, and garden arbors. This variety of features gives the park section a different character from the area described as a “landscape park” dating from the 19th century. Those interested in the design of historic gardens will find several distinct forms of park architecture in one place.

The French garden includes a tea pavilion on an island surrounded by water. The historic park also contains a large rhododendron with an information board dedicated to it. Fishponds with dense vegetation add a water-related accent to the landscape. The pavilion, rhododendron, and ponds represent different details: a structure in a distinctive setting, a notable plant, and a body of water framed by dense vegetation.

History, Music, and Culture

The park’s history dates back to 1780, when Websky began building the park in Pokój under the supervision of the gardener Klober. Another historical connection is Carol Maria von Weber’s stay there in 1806–1807. He stayed under the patronage of Prince Heinrich Friedrich Eugen, Pokój’s second owner. The beginnings of the park in the 18th century and Weber’s stay in the early 19th century thus represent two distinct points in time.

Pokój hosts an annual Weber Festival celebrating music in parks and gardens. If you are planning a trip around the festival, it is advisable to check the dates and details for the relevant year, as they may vary. The event draws on the local connection to Weber and puts music at its center, adding a recurring cultural dimension to the park’s history.

The Church of Duchess Sophie

The Church of Duchess Sophie offers its own architectural and historical focus. Its floor plan is elliptical and aligned along an east-west axis. Above the sacristy is a library containing a ducal book collection that survived a castle fire. The church also features historic 18th-century organs and richly decorated altars. Its layout, the history of its collection, and its furnishings represent different aspects of the building, each of distinct interest.

When exploring Pokój, these highlights are easy to distinguish: the park ensemble brings together garden history and designed landscapes, while the church adds a perspective on sacred architecture, organs, and a historic book collection. Those especially interested in park design can focus on the three distinct sections of the park. The church and the annual Weber Festival offer additional cultural highlights.

A headless monument to Frederick the Great is also located near Pokój. It is another historical point of interest, distinct in theme from the park grounds and the church.
