A defensive tower with an observation terrace, a pedestrian walkway on a disused railway bridge and preserved remnants of the fortifications give Krapkowice several distinct historical layers. There is also church art, a QR-marked route to local attractions and facilities at Krapkowicka Marina. When planning your stay, you can focus on architecture, local history or activities on the water.

The Oder and a changing town

Krapkowice is a town of medieval origin. For centuries, two distinct settlements existed here: Krapkowice, an important urban trading centre on the left bank of the Oder, and Otmęt, an old fishing settlement on the right bank. Trade and fishing therefore represent different chapters in the town’s history. A disused railway bridge now carries a pedestrian walkway.

Fortifications and technical monuments

The surviving fortifications include the defensive tower at the Upper Gate, dating from the 14th century, and an adjoining section of the defensive wall on Basztowa Street. Further fragments of the wall can be found in the northeastern corner of the town; a recessed section of wall has been preserved in the southwestern district. Technical monuments also include former paper mills with a beautiful red-brick clock tower and two lime kilns. The fortifications and industrial sites offer different perspectives on Krapkowice’s architectural history.

Krapkowicka Baszta and the church

Krapkowicka Baszta, also known as Wieża Bramy Górnej or Wieża Bramy Prudnickiej, is a rubble-stone tower in the Gothic-Renaissance style. It was built in the second half of the 14th century and remodelled around 1580. From the observation terrace, you can see the town panorama, St. Anne’s Mountain and the Opawskie Mountains; in poorer weather, the telescope installed there may help. Display cases are located in exhibition rooms on several floors. The Krapkowice hejnał is broadcast from the Baszta every day at noon. If you plan to visit the tower, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

St. Nicholas Church offers another perspective on the town’s architectural history. Its present architectural form dates from the late 14th century. The church, which has been remodelled several times, retains Gothic elements, including rib vaults in the presbytery. Its furnishings also include a 16th-century stone baptismal font and an elaborately decorated monstrance dating from 1744. The building’s form and furnishings reflect different historical periods.

Routes and visiting options

The Obuwniczy Szlak leads visitors to interesting sights in Krapkowice via shoe symbols marked with QR codes, while also introducing the town’s history. Alongside the individual buildings, this route offers another way to explore the town’s past.

At Krapkowice Castle, access to the castle courtyard is subject to one condition: you can enter when the school is open. There is a historic well in the courtyard, probably dating back to the Middle Ages. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether the school is open.

Krapkowicka Marina offers water sports equipment rental and a campsite. Check the current availability of these facilities before your visit.
