Waterways, woodland routes and traces of a fortified town give Kędzieryn-Koźle its distinctive character for exploration. Here, you can choose between a cycling tour through extensive woodland, a stroll through Koźle’s old town and an insight into the history of the waterways. The different themes can be explored independently—sometimes outdoors, sometimes right in the heart of the historic town.
The Oder, canals and cycling tours
In addition to the Oder, the Kłodnica, the Gliwice Canal, the Kłodnicki Canal and the Kędzierzyński Canal flow through Kędzieryn-Koźle. The smaller rivers Młyńska, Golka, Lineta and Liwela also add to the waterways. The Kłodnicki Canal connects this waterscape with an important chapter of history: it was built between 1792 and 1812, and its section through the town is among the best preserved.
A boat trip on the Oder and the Kłodnicki Canal, including passage through a lock, is described as one of the biggest tourist attractions in Kędzieryn-Koźle and the surrounding area. Check whether trips are available before making plans.
Cycling routes also run through the town and its surroundings. “Dookoła Kędzierzyna-Koźla” passes through numerous large woodland areas within the town and is offered in three variants of 19.7, 28.1 and 47.8 kilometres. The different distances make it easy to choose a route. Another option is “Wzdłuż Odry na południe”: this 40.6-kilometre route follows quieter municipal roads and well-maintained farm tracks and can be ridden on touring or recreational bicycles. Conditions may vary seasonally; check them before setting off.
Koźle: the market square and fortress history
Koźle’s old town retains its medieval layout: a rectangular market square lies at its centre, while gardens were created on the site of former fortifications. The square is lined with historic townhouses and features three sculptures of the Kozielskie Koziołki. Opposite them stands a fountain with a mermaid. These details make the market square a place to appreciate both architecture and small, easy-to-spot features of the townscape.
Those wishing to explore the history of the fortifications further can follow “Szlakiem Twierdzy Koźle”, a route to surviving fortress fragments and sites of former fortifications. One notable standalone building is the casemate powder magazine on ul. Grzegorza Piramowicza. It is considered the only surviving building of its kind in Silesia. Together with the gardens on former fortification grounds, it offers two different perspectives: a surviving structure here, and the former shape of the town’s fortifications in the street plan there.
Museums: from early tools to Blechhammer 1944
At the Muzeum Ziemi Kozielskiej, the permanent exhibition spans the period from prehistoric Stone, Bronze and Iron Age tools to medieval objects. It also includes silver coins from the 17th century from the “Skarb z Koźla”, cultural relics, and objects and information about Twierdza Koźle. The museum is located in the cellar rooms of the former south wing of the Silesian Piast castle, beneath the castle courtyard, and in the observation tower.
The “Śląskiej Bitwy o Paliwo Blechhammer – 1944” museum focuses on a different period of history. It is located in the Osiedlowy Dom Kultury LECH in the Blachownia district, ul. Wyzwolenia 7. The walking route “Szlakiem II wojny światowej” also starts there. The museum and route are thus directly connected: the starting point of the walk is also the museum’s location.
