Żyrardów’s history can be read in a clearly defined urban area: the factory settlement and the adjoining former factory grounds now form the historic centre. Together, they cover about 70 ha and are listed as a Pomnik Historii (History Monument). For a trip focused on industrial heritage, this provides a framework for museums, architecture and a walk through the settlement.
The Factory Town and Its History
The 19th-century factory settlement includes a workers’ settlement, a villa district for managers, and numerous public and factory buildings. The “Industrialny Żyrardów” industrial heritage trail offers a walk through the factory settlement. The different building types bring the various parts of the historic urban structure into focus.
The Muzeum Mazowsza Zachodniego explores Żyrardów’s history, its textile factories and the traditional material culture of the city’s population. Its permanent gallery features works by Józef Rapacki. A special exhibit is the panorama of Żyrardów from 1899, commissioned by the owners of Zakłady Żyrardowskie for the World’s Fair in Paris. The museum thus focuses both on the city’s history and on a specific work connected with the history of international exhibitions.
Machinery, Architecture and Interactive Exhibits
The Muzeum Lniarstwa im. Filipa de Girarda is housed in the halls of a former printing works in the post-industrial Bielnik area, which once belonged to the Żyrardów factory’s production complex. Its main exhibition includes dozens of historic machines and pieces of equipment from the former linen mills. Together, they form a complete technological line—from processing textile raw materials to manufacturing fabric. Here, the focus is on production itself.
Resursa also brings together architecture and city history. The cultural institution was originally designed after the model of English clubs and was reserved for the local elite. Following its restoration, it regained its former splendour and is once again a vibrant cultural venue. In the ballroom, rich gilding and colourful murals meet a Renaissance-style design with classical elements.
MOTKa—the Multimedialny Ośrodek Tradycji i Edukacji Kulturowej—was created for residents and tourists, with a particular focus on children and young people. It features an interactive model of Żyrardów’s historic factory settlement. Visitors use a wristband to activate multimedia stations in sequence and take on quizzes, games and puzzles. The model depicts the settlement, while the stations focus on activities and interaction.
Green Spaces and Getting There
Park im. Karola Augusta Dittricha offers a different focus from industrial history: the nearly 6 ha green space lies in central Żyrardów, in the residential district of the factory settlement. Its naturalistic water system includes numerous bridges. Alongside factory grounds, museums and historic buildings, the cityscape also features this centrally located landscaped area.
Żyrardów railway station may be useful when planning your journey. It serves regional and long-distance routes to Warsaw, Poznań, Łódź and Skierniewice. Check the timetable before travelling, as train services may change.
Further afield, Termy Mszczonów offers a different theme. Its thermal water has a temperature of 26 to 34 °C and is drawn from a depth of more than 1,600 metres. This adds another dimension to the region without shifting the focus away from Żyrardów’s industrial history.
