Węgrów: between the Liwiec Valley and historic regions

Węgrów is considered the heart of the Liwiec Valley. The town lies in the valley of the Liwiec, which separates the historic regions of Masovia and Podlasie. The river gives the destination a distinct geographical character: the landscape can be understood both in terms of a valley and the boundary between two historic regions. In Węgrów, this view of the landscape is complemented by a layered architectural history, ranging from church art to a wooden church dating from the 17th century.

Church art and traces of different eras

The Minor Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the oldest building in Węgrów. It was elevated to the rank of Minor Basilica on April 4, 1997. Its sacristy houses Twardowski’s Mirror, which dates from the second half of the 16th century. Within the historical perspective, the mirror marks an earlier period than the basilica’s elevation in 1997.

The wall paintings also connect Węgrów’s churches with a specific artist: between 1706 and 1709, Michał Anioł Palloni created nine large wall paintings in the parish church. He painted nine more frescoes in the Poreformaten Church. The Poreformaten complex consists of a monastery and a church dedicated to Saint Peter of Alcántara and Saint Anthony of Padua. In Węgrów, you can therefore encounter different forms of sacred architecture as well as several groups of Palloni’s works.

The Gdański House represents a different architectural style: this Baroque building dates from the mid-18th century and stands on the north side of the market square. Along with the churches, it broadens the view of Węgrów to include a secular building from a later period.

Wooden architecture and leisure by the Liwiec

A Lutheran wooden church made of larch stands in the Protestant cemetery. It dates from the 17th century and was built in 1679. It is considered the oldest wooden architectural monument in the area. Its material, exact year of construction, and regional significance give the church a distinctive place alongside the stone religious buildings.

The Evangelical Church in Węgrów also preserves the only original instrument by M. R. Müller in central Poland. The instrument is currently unusable and requires extensive renovation. This limitation is part of the instrument’s story; it should therefore not be considered an option for playing at present.

Zalew nad Liwcem offers a different kind of experience. It has ten fishing spots, jetties, and 2.3 kilometers of cycling paths. There are also children’s playgrounds, sports courts for volleyball, basketball, and badminton, as well as picnic areas. These concrete leisure activities complement the historic buildings, offering opportunities for cycling, fishing, playing, and sports.

You can choose the focus of your trip based on the discoveries that interest you most.
