Sterdyń offers several distinct cultural perspectives: the late Baroque parish church of St. Anne, its residential history, and roadside shrines and monuments. The buildings and memorial sites span several centuries. If you are planning a culturally focused stay, you can start by asking whether sacred art, architectural history or local memorial sites are of particular interest.

St. Anne: Late Baroque Church and Altar Figures

The parish church of St. Anne was built in the late Baroque style from 1779 to 1783. Its construction dates place it at the end of the 18th century. The high altar is adorned with sculptures of Saints Joseph, Matthew, Jude Thaddeus and James the Greater. This brings two aspects to the fore: the period when the church was built and the specific figures named at the altar. Those interested in sacred art can consider both subjects separately, without conflating the church’s construction history with its furnishings. The names of the four saints give the high altar its own distinct focus.

Residential History Spanning Several Centuries

The palace and park complex in Sterdyń dates from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. The Ossoliński Palace dates from the 18th century and was extensively remodelled in the 19th century. A more specific account of changes to the former Baroque residence has also been preserved: in the early 19th century, it was extended and remodelled for Stanisław Ossoliński to a design by Jakub Kubicki. These dates trace a timeline from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries through to the architectural alterations of the 19th century. The remodelling of the former Baroque residence is associated with a specific architect and patron. The residence’s history therefore cannot be reduced to a single construction date or building phase.

Roadside Shrines and Religious Motifs

Two roadside shrines add to Sterdyń’s sacred landmarks. A roadside shrine dating from the late 18th century bears a sculpture of St. Florian. Another was made in 1856 and depicts the Immaculate Conception of Mary. The comparison highlights both the difference in dates and the distinct motifs: one features Florian, the other the figure of Mary. Together with the sculptures at the high altar, the roadside shrines offer a separate perspective on religious depictions in the town, which can be placed across several decades.

Monuments and Memorial Sites

The monuments in Sterdyń commemorate different people and events. One monument commemorates the emancipation of the peasants by the National Government in 1863. It was erected in 1963, on the centenary of the event. The dates therefore clearly distinguish between the historical occasion and the later erection of the monument. Another monument is dedicated to soldiers of the Home Army (Armia Krajowa) and consists of a large granite boulder.

A memorial stone with a plaque in a green space on ul. Tadeusza Kościuszki commemorates eleven residents of Paulinów and Stary Ratyniec. They were murdered during the war for saving Jews. The number of people, the places they came from and the reason for the memorial give this site a clearly defined focus. The different memorial sites can therefore be distinguished by what they commemorate: the emancipation of the peasants, soldiers of the Home Army, and the murdered rescuers.

When looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Sterdyń, you can start with your own cultural interests: sacred art, residential history or memorial sites.
