Sochaczew can be explored from two very different perspectives: the city’s castle and museum history, and cycling and water activities. The Castle of the Masovian Dukes stands on the right bank of the Bzura, on a hill above the city. If you are looking for hotels in Sochaczewski, you can first decide whether to focus on Sochaczew itself or also include the nearby Chopin sites of Brochów and Żelazowa Wola.
Castle History and Collections in Sochaczew
Around the middle of the 14th century, Duke Siemowit III had the castle built of masonry in the Gothic style. The Museum of the Sochaczew Land and the Bzura Battlefield presents exhibits in four large permanent exhibitions. It also collects material evidence of material culture and archives connected with the history of Sochaczew and the region. A historic building and collections on the history of the city and region thus offer different ways to explore the area.
One permanent exhibition is titled “Battlefield 1939–1945.” It displays weapons, equipment, uniforms and other memorabilia from the 1939 Polish Campaign. History enthusiasts can therefore find both a look at the Gothic castle and exhibits and archives connected with the city and its region.
Narrow-Gauge Railway, Cycling Route and the Bzura
The Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum has the largest collection of narrow-gauge vehicles on the European continent. From April to October, it organizes trips on the narrow-gauge line into Kampinos National Park. These seasonal rides offer a different focus from the museum exhibitions: rather than the collections, the journey on the narrow-gauge line takes center stage. Check the specific timetable before your visit.
The cycling routes also offer different focuses. The “Sochaczew Connector” cycle route runs from Żelazowa Wola via Kożuszki to Sochaczew railway station; the station is at kilometer 9.9. The “Trail of Remembrance of the Heroes of the 1939 Battle of the Bzura” is presented as a cycling route that combines active recreation with learning about history. For an activity on the water, a kayaking trip on the Bzura can begin at a landing stage in the center of Sochaczew, next to the castle ruins. This gives you a choice of different ideas: a specific cycling connection, a historically focused cycling route and a possible kayaking trip.
Chopin Sites in the Nearby Area
In nearby Brochów, the Church of St. Roch and St. John the Baptist is associated with two important events in Chopin’s family history: on June 2, 1806, his parents, Mikołaj Chopin and Tekla Justyna of the Krzyżanowski family, were married there. On April 23, 1810, Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin was baptized in the same church. The baptism also connects Brochów with the Chopin Trail.
Żelazowa Wola is also in the vicinity of the destination. The Fryderyk Chopin Birthplace Museum is located there and managed by the National Fryderyk Chopin Institute. Żelazowa Wola is also home to a landscape park designed and established by Professor Franciszek Krzywda-Polkowski between 1931 and 1937. It contains more than 3,000 plant species and varieties. The Chopin connections therefore differ between the two places: in Brochów, the church, marriage and baptism take center stage; in Żelazowa Wola, the birthplace museum and landscape park do.
When choosing accommodation, it helps to keep these focuses distinct: the castle, collections and activities in Sochaczew on the one hand, and the nearby Chopin sites on the other.
