In Biskupice, local history and practical geographical orientation come together: the burial mound commemorates the battle of October 1914, an archaeological site tells of earlier settlement phases, and the Zimna Woda flows through the village. Remembrance, archaeology and religious wayside markers offer different thematic perspectives. You can decide which of these to include in your travel plans based on your interests.

Archaeological traces from several periods

Archaeological site 1 is a settlement from the late La Tène period and the Roman Imperial period; traces of a settlement belonging to the Trzciniec culture have also been found there. These different periods offer a glimpse into several phases of the area's history.

An excavation covering 648 m² uncovered 173 features. These include 31 smelting furnaces, 14 hearths, a well and two sunken-featured buildings. The different types of features give the site a distinct profile: they include traces of various structures and activities.

One of the two adjacent sunken-featured buildings is particularly evocative; it served as an amber workshop. Inside, 2.5 kg of small amber fragments and broken beads were found. This identification applies to this particular building and connects the settlement traces with a specific craft activity.

Burial mound and religious wayside markers

The burial mound in Biskupice contains a communal grave of German and Russian soldiers who fell in the battle of October 1914. The mound is listed in the municipal register of monuments and is a special place of remembrance in the area's history.

A wayside shrine with a cross and commemorative plaque stands on Road 720, opposite number 26. The steel cross is considered an example of artistic metalwork. A separate wayside statue of the Virgin Mary stands at the junction of Road 720 and the road to Koszajec, ul. Długa.

The statue depicts Mary standing on a globe, her head slightly tilted and her hands outstretched. She wears a dress, cloak and veil. The statue stands on a clinker-brick plinth, is protected by a glazed enclosure and is surrounded by a wooden fence. The description of the statue and the features of the shrine distinguish these two religious sites.

River, pilgrimages and getting there

The Zimna Woda River flows through Biskupice, adding a geographical feature to the area's historical landmarks. Pilgrimages also pass through the village, heading to the Sanctuary of Our Lady, Primate Help of the Faithful, in Rokitno. If you would like to include a pilgrimage in your stay, check the specific dates in advance.

Transport links include Voivodeship Road 720 and County Road 3110W from Biskupice to Koszajec. Biskupice is also close to the A2 motorway and has bus services. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current services for your travel date.

For cyclists, the planned status of a project is important: a roughly 470 m long pedestrian and cycle path was planned along Voivodeship Road 720, from the viaduct over the A2 motorway to a side road towards Kotowice and MOP BrwinĂłw. The path was intended to improve tourist access to the burial mound. If you want to plan your route around it, check the current path layout before setting off.
