A striking starting point for planning a trip is the Vistula near Płock, which is almost 1.5 kilometers wide. Together with Wzgórze Tumskie and the Sobótka area, it points to different themes: river scenery, cultural history and activities on the water. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first decide which of these themes matters most to you during your stay.
Riverside scenery
Płock lies on a steep, 52-meter-high escarpment known as Wzgórze Tumskie. On the riverbank is Zalew Sobótka, an oxbow lake of the Vistula. The broad river and the oxbow lake represent different scales and forms of waterside scenery. Sobótka is also a specific place for the beach, paths and waterside leisure activities.
Cathedral history
Beneath the north tower of the cathedral, the Royal Chapel contains a sarcophagus with the remains of the Polish rulers Władysław Herman and Bolesław Krzywousty. The Diocesan Museum in Płock is one of Poland’s oldest church museums. It was founded in 1903 at the initiative of the priest A. J. Nowowiejski. Those interested in sacred history can regard the Royal Chapel and the museum as two separate focal points for their stay.
Paths and promenades by the water
One specific walking route on Wzgórze Tumskie is the approximately five-kilometer walk from the zoo to the park behind Dom Technika. The Vistula also has a 358-meter-long promenade pier. Built in 2010, it is the only structure of its kind in Poland. The route, with its two endpoints, and the pier are distinct landmarks to consider when planning walks in Płock.
A tourist train starts at the zoo and travels to the riverside area, the boat landing, the pier, Sobótka beach and the Old Market Square. Check when the train runs before your trip. This way, you can include the tourist ride in your plans without confusing it with the approximately five-kilometer walking route.
Sobótka: beach, paths and sports
The Sobótka reservoir area has clean water and a sandy beach. The beach has a beach volleyball court, a children’s slide, and kayak and pedal boat rentals. Cycling and walking paths run around Zalew Sobótka; the area is also a popular training spot for runners. The beach, paths and rental facilities bring together a range of activities around this body of water.
September also brings a regular focus of events there: every year, the Polish Rowing Sprint Championships and the J. Kawiecki Memorial are held at the Sobótka reservoir area. If you plan to visit Płock that month, you can take these recurring events into account when planning your dates.
Chopin and nearby excursion destinations
Chopin concerts accompanied by readings of Polish poetry have been held in Sanniki since 1981. In February and October, they take place on Sundays near the anniversaries of Chopin’s birth and death; in the other months, they are held on the first Sunday. The historical connection to Fryderyk Chopin is also specific: in the summer of 1828, when he was 18, he stayed as a guest of the Pruszak landowning family at the Chopin Palace and Park Complex in Sanniki. The family were friends of his parents.
The Brudzeński Landscape Park lies west of Płock and is traversed by the Skrwa. Its picturesque ravines offer opportunities for canoe trips; the Płock stage of the Poland Bike Marathon also passes through the area. Another destination is Wiączemin Polski, less than 30 kilometers from Płock. At the open-air museum of Vistula settlement history, visitors can also see the Powidlarnię.
