Explore Góra Kalwaria by following themed routes and visiting individual historic buildings.

Four themes for your walking tour

A municipal notice from 2021 lists four routes for exploring on foot: the Szlak Nowej Jeruzalem, the Szlak Kultury Żydowskiej, the Szlak Formacji Wojskowych, and the Szlak Wielokulturowej Góry Kalwarii. The routes were described as paths leading to historic sites, people, places, and events. Their names focus on different themes: New Jerusalem, Jewish culture, military formations, and multicultural Góra Kalwaria. They offer a thematic way to explore the area, while individual buildings provide specific details about architecture, religious history, and art. Before setting out, check the current signage and local trail conditions.

Town hall and neoclassical architecture

The town hall is a neoclassical building with arcades. Its construction was completed in 1834, and it was designed by Bonifacy Witkowski. The combination of its style, arcades, and precisely dated completion provides specific points of reference for exploring the city’s architecture. The arcades structure the building and add a named architectural feature to its general style description.

Jewish history and preserved details

The Alter family prayer house was built in 1903 as a house for religious study. It was intended for Jews visiting the Tzaddik. Preserved features include round windows with Stars of David and an oven for baking matzah. Important for planning your visit: the building is not open to visitors. Its history can be understood through its religious function and preserved architectural details, not through an interior visit.

The former synagogue was built in the early 20th century and is now used as a shopping gallery. As uses can change, check its current status if you are planning a visit specifically for this reason. The Jewish cemetery was established in 1802; about 400 gravestones remain, although the number may change. These sites highlight different aspects of history: the changed use of a former religious building and the cemetery’s preserved gravestones.

The “Na Górce” church and its wax Pietà

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on the market square is commonly called “Na Górce.” It houses a wax Pietà depicting Mary with the dead Christ in her lap. The sculpture is considered Poland’s most valuable wax sculpture. The church’s local nickname and the specifically described artwork offer two distinct points of interest: the name of a well-known place and a single work with a distinctive depiction.

The distinction is useful when choosing what to focus on during your visit: the routes organize exploration by theme, while individual buildings and the cemetery are defined by specific dates, functions, and features. Consider whether you would rather discover Góra Kalwaria through a historical perspective or through individual architectural, religious, and artistic details. This priority can give your plans for your stay a clear direction.
