On December 8, 1929, the Muzeum Ziemi Zawkrzeńskiej officially opened. The date offers a striking starting point for exploring Mława’s history. The city’s location also provides context: Mława lies in the Wzniesienia Mławskie hills on the Seracz River. The museum, architectural history and fortifications offer different points of interest from the nature themes around the Las Mławski.

Museum and architectural history

The Muzeum Ziemi Zawkrzeńskiej has five departments, including archaeology, history, art and nature. Its historical focus is particularly well defined: the history department presents a permanent exhibition on the history of Mława and the Zawkrzeńska region from the 16th century to the end of the Second World War. The exhibition’s timeframe thus extends well beyond the year the museum opened.

The museum also has an education department, which runs museum lessons and workshops. Those interested in architecture can find another historical reference in the Bank Polski building. Built in 1938, it is one of the most interesting examples of interwar modernist architecture in northern Masovia.

Another construction date takes us further back: the former prison on what is now Narutowicza Street in Mława was built in 1889. Together, the museum and the bank building offer different ways to explore the history of the place, though they do not represent the same period or the same architectural history.

Fortifications and historic routes

The Mławski Szlak Turystyczny runs through Mława and includes original Second World War fortifications along its route, including combat bunkers and trenches. This provides a distinct way to explore the area’s history, focusing on military structures rather than exhibitions or architecture.

The “Krajewo” fortification group, with two bunkers; “Piekiełko,” with four bunkers; and “Dźwierznia Łysa Góra,” also with four bunkers, are located at the northern edge of the Las Mławski. The names and numbers clearly distinguish the three groups.

Forest, lake and nature

The Las Mławski is located within the Zieluńsko-Rzęgnowski Obszar Chronionego Krajobrazu. Nature trails have been designated in the forest. There is also a specific natural feature in Krajewo: a lake in the Las Mławski has a pine bog woodland habitat on an island. The nature theme therefore encompasses both the designated trails and a specific habitat.

The European bison enclosure in Krajewo has an important educational role. If you include it in your travel plans, check the opening days before visiting. This lets you factor in its educational value while planning around the current opening days.

Getting around Mława

The E 65 railway main line, National Road 7, and Voivodeship Roads 544 and 563 run through Mława. These transport routes provide a different point of reference for getting around from the specific streets along which cycle paths are listed.

A city map from 2021 shows cycle paths along Działdowska Street, Aleja Marszałkowska, Górna Street, Szpitalna Street, Kopernika Street, Piłsudskiego Street, Napoleońska Street and Padlewskiego Street, as well as Aleja św. Wojciecha. The network may have changed since then; check the current route before setting out. The transport routes run through Mława, while the cycle paths are assigned to specific streets.
