A protected lime tree, an early medieval hillfort and a former school building with several historical uses offer tangible ways to explore the natural and local history of Horoszki Małe. Traces of the past span from the early Middle Ages to the independent village shown on an Austrian map from 1801–1804. The school’s history also offers insight into different forms of local community life.

A protected lime tree

A protected small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata) stands beside the property of P. Wedziuk on the Bonin–Horoszki Mała road. The tree has a trunk circumference of 123 cm and a height of 24 m. This single natural monument brings together a botanical name, protected status and two distinct measurements: the circumference of the trunk and the height of the tree. This makes the lime tree a clearly defined natural feature within the history of the village.

From hillfort to mapped village

Horoszki Małe is also home to an early medieval hillfort. It belongs to a different period from the village’s appearance on a map: by the beginning of the 19th century at the latest, Horoszki Małe existed as an independent village and was marked on an Austrian map from 1801–1804. The map therefore does not date the hillfort; it documents the village’s status in the early 19th century. Comparing the two keeps the early medieval archaeological connection distinct from the later history of the village recorded on a map.

The former school building

On the outskirts of Horoszki Małe, in the middle of a pine forest, a brick primary school building with a teachers’ apartment was constructed in 1957–1958. The building’s history thus combines its educational purpose with a specifically mentioned residential area. In 2006, the former school building was sold to a private owner for tourism and commercial use. The house’s timeline runs from its construction through the sale to the inscription on its façade recorded in 2016.

School and community activities

The school’s history also includes events for neighbouring schools and rural youth: sports competitions, as well as handball and football matches. In the 1960s, there were Scout groups in Horoszki Małe; campfires, bivouacs and sledging trips involving local residents were frequently held. From 1976 to 2000, training camps in pre-military defence were held in Horoszki Małe for students at secondary schools. The examples differ in purpose and participants: school competitions, Scout activities in the 1960s, and training camps between 1976 and 2000.

Gravesite and wooden cross

Unknown Russian soldiers from the Second World War are buried in the forest beside the Konstantynów–Sarnaki road, next to the former primary school building. Horoszki Małe is also home to a low, blue-painted wooden cross dating from 1949, surrounded by a wooden fence. The two local features have different historical connections: the soldiers and the Second World War are central to the gravesite, while the cross stands out for its shape, blue colour, wooden construction and date.
