Wieliszew lies on the slope above Lake Jezioro Wieliszewskie. The lake is a remnant of a former meander of the Narew; from the slope, the view stretches across the water and the meadows below. The landscape, activities by the lake and historic sites offer different ways to spend your stay, without the need for a packed itinerary.

Lake, Beach and Outdoor Activities

At Zalew Zegrzyński, a one-kilometre paved route in Wieliszew is closed to cars. Many cyclists and inline skaters use it. Its length provides a clear reference for anyone planning a short route into their day; however, it does not indicate how long a walk would take. If you would rather explore the area around the lake, you can do so by bicycle or on horseback. There is also a horse-riding stable right beside Jezioro Wieliszewskie.

The beach in Wieliszew is one of the largest on the lake and was modernised in 2013. Facilities include barbecue areas, a playground, a pier and toilets. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit. This helps you treat the beach as a separate activity rather than confusing it with the cycling route: the focus here is on the beach areas and their facilities, while the paved route is for cyclists and inline skaters.

The beach also hosts sporting and cultural events. These include the Amatorskie Mistrzostwa Zalewu Zegrzyńskiego w Siatkówce Plażowej, as well as film screenings, concerts, children’s events and family competitions. The programme also includes the Wieliszewski Festiwal Folkowo-Szantowy „Szanty nad Zalewem”, qualifying rounds for the competition for the Złoty Pagaj, and the children’s game „Bezpieczeństwo nad Jeziorem Zegrzyńskim” featuring Kapitan Wyderki, the mascot of Komisariat Rzeczny Policji. The programme may change, so check specific dates before your trip.

Midsummer’s Eve and Local History

The „Wieliszewskie Wianki” festival takes place during Midsummer’s Eve, known as Sobótka, in Świętojański Park by Jezioro Wieliszewskie. In 2025, it was held on 21 and 22 June; it was announced for the weekend of 20–21 June 2026. These dates show how the festival is planned from year to year, while events at the beach offer another cultural option.

A large Neoclassical chapel bearing the inscription „Żona Mężowi” stands in the cemetery in Wieliszew. Maria Gautier, wife of the then owner of the village and Wieliszew estate, founded it in 1834. Its dedication and date of construction give the chapel a specific historical connection. There is also a military cemetery in the grounds, where about 300 Polish soldiers, mostly members of the 5th Infantry Division, are buried. They defended the crossing over the Narew in September 1939.

An earlier chapter in the town’s history dates back to 1387. On 20 July, Ścibor of Radzymin, Bishop of Płock, ordered the construction of a church in Wieliszew on the lands of the Canons Regular of Czerwińsk nad Wisłą in a charter of endowment. There is also an observation tower by the parish church of Przemienienia Pańskiego. Together, the church’s history, the chapel and the military cemetery offer a different way to explore the area from its waterside attractions.

This distinction can help with planning your trip: if you are mainly looking for scenery and a short route, the lake and cycling route offer suitable options; if you are interested in history, you can visit the chapel and military cemetery and explore the area’s early church history. The beach and events offer another focus. You can match whichever options matter most for your stay to your preferred travel dates and the event programme at the time.
