In Zielonogórski, military history and technology meet Bronze Age finds and landscapes of forests, water and wetlands. A good place to start is the Lubuskie Muzeum Wojskowe in Drzonowo: it presents exhibits from the Middle Ages to the present day in four permanent exhibition rooms in a 19th-century Neoclassical palace. There is also a collection of heavy military equipment in the palace park and an exhibition pavilion.

From military technology to regional collections

The museum’s holdings include military vehicles, armoured personnel carriers, tanks, artillery and fortifications, as well as aircraft and helicopters. Historical periods and specific technologies stand side by side: the collection spans the broad timeframe covered by the permanent exhibitions and includes individual vehicle and equipment categories.

A different perspective is offered by the permanent exhibition “Wicina – gród metalurgów sprzed 2500 lat” at the Muzeum Archeologiczne Środkowego Nadodrza. It presents finds from a Bronze Age settlement of the Lusatian culture. Bronze, gold, glass and iron jewellery is shown alongside weapon components, tools and pottery. These different groups of finds give the exhibition its distinctive thematic range.

In Babimost, the Izba Pamiątek Regionalnych showcases ethnographic collections of agricultural tools, folk costumes, household objects, musical instruments and weaving equipment. Its exhibits range from work and household life to clothing, music and weaving. The history of design also has a distinctive highlight: Henry van de Velde designed the interiors of the Dom Pomocy Społecznej in Trzebiechów, which was built in the first decade of the 20th century. Original elements of the wooden door fittings, staircase and glazing have been preserved, along with furniture, fireplaces, polychrome decorations and other fittings.

Forest landscapes and trails

The Laski nature reserve protects forest areas in the Gniła Obra valley. Together with wet meadows, natural ponds and marshes, they form a species-rich floristic and faunistic ecosystem. North of Podlegórz, the Radowice nature reserve features a different type of landscape: deep ravines are covered with old beech forest, and streams rise from numerous springs in the forest.

For cyclists, a 2-kilometre blue trail runs from Podlegórz to the Radowice nature reserve; check trail conditions before setting out. Another cycle route connects Babimost with the scenic Lake Linie over 12 kilometres, then continues towards Kargowa. The red Augusta Wilhelm Hans von Schierstaedt circular trail is 13 kilometres long and runs between Leśniów Mały and Laski. Here, too, check trail conditions before your trip.

On foot, you can take a 10-kilometre blue hiking trail that runs from Trzebiechów through Podlegórz and Ostrzyce and back to Trzebiechów. Another red trail runs along the southern slopes of the Wał Zielonogórski between the Zalew nad Ochlą and the Wieża Bismarcka (Wilkanowska). This route is listed as 7.5 kilometres long, with an elevation difference of about 70 metres. The varying lengths and routes make it easier to choose a hike that suits your preferred itinerary.

Waterways and wine

Two routes can also be distinguished by river and length. The 9-kilometre Oder kayaking route runs from Mielno via Wielobłota and Przytoczki to Cigacice. The 11-kilometre Obrzyca kayaking route starts in Smolno Wielkie and also ends in Cigacice, via Podlegórz, Radowice and Górzykowo. Organised kayaking trips take place on the Bóbr River; its fast current, gentle gradient and slightly winding course offer a sporting challenge.

The Zalew Świdnicki near Świdnica consists of two bodies of water covering a total area of 5 hectares. A designated bathing area is supervised by lifeguards during the holiday season; check the seasonal bathing arrangements before your trip. A marina at Stary Kramsko on Lake Wojnowskie offers residents and tourists opportunities for water sports and relaxation, as well as a safe place to stay. Check current facilities and water conditions before visiting.

Another discovery awaits wine lovers: the winemakers at the Słoneczne Tarasy winery invite visitors for a wine tasting. Culture, landscapes and wine thus offer different themes for your trip through Zielonogórski.
