Rokitno offers several different reasons to visit: sacred architecture, a Calvary Path and two cycling routes that pass through the town. At its heart is the sanctuary, with its long tradition of Marian devotion and a history of construction that can be placed in context using specific dates. You can plan your stay around what matters most to you: culture and history, the Calvary Path or a cycling tour. When looking for a holiday apartment, making this choice can help you decide in advance what to focus on during your trip.
Sanctuary: Marian Devotion and Building History
Since the second half of the 17th century, the sanctuary in Rokitno has been a centre of Marian devotion without interruption. The miraculous image in the church was recognized as miraculous on 4 March 1670. The date records a specific event; the continuing devotion describes a longer religious context. Those exploring the history of the place can therefore distinguish the history of the miraculous image from the sanctuary’s significance over many generations.
The building history can also be placed in context: the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Rokitno was built between 1740 and 1762. Its vault is adorned with polychrome decoration from the 18th century. “Polychrome” means multicoloured; here, the term refers to the decoration of the vault. The sanctuary is also one of the few surviving tangible traces of Cistercian activity in the region. On 20 November 2024, it was recognized as a Monument of History by an ordinance of the President of the Republic of Poland. The long religious tradition, the architecture and the more recent designation thus provide distinct, clearly dated ways of exploring the history of the place.
The sanctuary also includes a museum and a garden. If you would like to include both in your plans, check current visiting arrangements before your visit.
Calvary Path and Annual Procession
The Rokitniańska Calvary offers a 4.5-kilometre path with 32 stations. It is a focus in its own right alongside the basilica: the length of the path and the number of stations give it a defined structure, while the procession makes it possible to experience it as part of a religious tradition. Every year on the Friday before Palm Sunday, thousands of worshippers walk the entire Calvary Path to the sanctuary in a torchlight procession. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the date for the relevant year. A regular visit to the path and participation in the annual procession are different reasons to visit, which you can take into account when planning your trip.
Two Cycling Routes Through Rokitno
Rokitno lies on two mapped cycling routes. The red route is 21.5 kilometres long and runs from Nowa Skwierzynka via Chełmsko and Rokitno to Wierzbno. The yellow route covers 30 kilometres, running from Twierdzielewo via Rokitno, Przytoczna, Goraj and Strychy. Both routes pass through Rokitno, but differ in total length and in the places listed along the way.
At 30 kilometres, the yellow route is 8.5 kilometres longer than the red one. The order of the places also differs: on the red route, Chełmsko comes before Rokitno, followed by Wierzbno, while the yellow route runs from Twierdzielewo via Rokitno and continues to Przytoczna, Goraj and Strychy. Check local route conditions before planning a tour.
Getting There and Planning Your Stay
As a road-based guide, from the “Międzyrzecz Północ” exit on the S3, turn left towards Rokitno/Przytoczna and then continue for 12 kilometres to Rokitno. Road conditions and signage may change; check the current situation before setting out.
When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first decide which of these themes matters most for your trip: the history of the sanctuary, the Calvary Path or one of the cycling routes. The cultural details, the different lengths of the two routes and the annual procession date give you specific points to consider when making your decision. If you plan to visit the museum or garden, also check visiting arrangements; for a cycling tour, it is worth checking the latest conditions on your chosen route.
