In Tomaszów Lubelski, buildings, the town plan and memorial sites tell the city’s story in different ways. The Renaissance market square forms the centre of the historic town plan, which is still preserved today except for the western part, destroyed during the last war.

Cultural history in Tomaszów Lubelski

On Kościelna Street stands a Baroque wooden church built in 1627. It is described as Tomaszów Lubelski’s most valuable historic monument. Clear traces of the former defensive walls and town moat remain behind the church. Together with the historic town plan, these features reveal different facets of the city’s history: a preserved building, remnants of the fortifications and the layout of a Renaissance town.

The market squares also tell the story of the city’s development. The Salt Market came into being because the city was granted the privilege of storing salt. An Orthodox church built in the late 19th century stands beside the market. A monument at the market’s southeastern corner commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of 3 May. Another monument stands in front of the municipal administration building and commemorates the battles for Tomaszów Lubelski.

The Muzeum Janusza Petera is also part of the cultural experience. Its collection comprises around 15,000 exhibits covering archaeology, history, numismatics, ethnography and art. This gives you two distinct perspectives to explore by theme: the buildings and historic town plan on the one hand, and the diverse collection areas on the other. The approximate number of exhibits also gives an idea of the collection’s size.
