At the centre of Łagów, the Zamek Joannitów stands on a strip of land between two lakes. From here, you can explore some of the area’s defining features: its architectural history, the connected bodies of water and routes of varying lengths. This lets you plan your time according to your interests—whether you prefer to see historic buildings, seek out waterside views or choose a tour with a specified duration.
Lakes and town centre
Lake Ciecz, also known as Lake Trześniowskie, and Lake Łagowskie are connected in the centre of Łagów by a shallow canal. Their names help distinguish the two bodies of water, while the canal describes their connection. At Lake Łagowskie, you can enjoy the view from a boat, kayak or pedal boat. This offers a different perspective from the panoramic view of Łagów from the 35-metre-high tower of Zamek Joannitów.
The railway viaduct on Mostowa Street also offers a view over the town. Built in 1906, it is 40 metres long and about 25 metres high. Stairs lead up to it, and from the top the panoramic view stretches across Łagów. This gives you two named viewpoints with distinct architectural character: the castle tower and the railway-era viaduct.
Traces of different centuries
Brama Marchijska is a valuable medieval feature of the town’s fortifications. It was built in the 16th century on the site of a presumed wooden predecessor dating from the 14th century. The chronology is notable: the present structure and its possible predecessor belong to different centuries, and the existence of the earlier construction remains explicitly a matter of conjecture.
The Kościół św. Jana Chrzciciela church adds another architectural form to this historic picture. Built of stone and brick, it is neoclassical and dates from 1725; it was remodelled in 1877. Together, the castle, town gate and viaduct create a route through different periods of construction, without reducing the sights to a single style or century.
Events and routes
Łagów is also associated with recurring events. Lubuskie Lato Filmowe has been held in Łagów every year since 1969. Jarmark Smakosza is also a regular event. If you want to plan your stay around an event, check the specific dates before travelling: no fixed date is given here for Jarmark Smakosza.
Route information ranges from around 40 minutes to tours lasting several hours. The Sokola Góra nature and culture route is about 1.5 kilometres long, takes around 40 minutes and lies right next to the Lower Castle area. The easy Jezioro Łagowskie landscape route covers about 9 kilometres and takes around two and a half hours. The Jezioro Czarne nature and cultural history route is listed as about 12 kilometres and around three hours. These figures provide a practical guide when comparing route length and time required.
The Pawski Ług nature trail runs 12 kilometres from the Lower Castle area to a peat bog reserve and back along the western shore of Lake Łagowskie. Another longer option is the Skansen Jemiołów nature and cultural history route: it runs 13 kilometres from the Lower Castle area to the open-air agricultural museum in Jemiołów. The Bracikowo nature and landscape route runs from Łagów through Jemiołów and Bracikowo and back to Łagów, covering 18 kilometres. The Buczyna route runs via Sieniawa, Buczyna, Bucze and Żelechów back to Łagów; it covers 22 kilometres. For these two routes, the places and distance are given, but not the walking or cycling time.
In the wider region, the Łagowskie Stowarzyszenie Turystyki Rowerowej i Pieszej has designated four cycling routes and six walking routes through the landscape of Łagowsko-Sulęciński Park. The routes vary in length and difficulty. When choosing your stay, you can consider two questions separately: which buildings or waterside views interest you most, and how much time do you want to set aside for a route? The options described range from a short route beside the Lower Castle area to longer routes passing through several named places.
